Hi All,

I've mulled this over for a while and once I saw the wonderful photos that Louis has posted of his collection/museum I decided I would ask what do you all collect that is displayed with or augments your Toy Soldier Collections?

I have a lot of things that go along with my Soldiers or at least with my first sets which are mainly Cavalry and Armor Force Related such as my Cavalry Saber from Military School and my Spanish American War era Spurs. I have a nearly complete collection of Armor and Cavalry Insignia going back to before the American Civil War and of course I have a large number of Armor Patches from WWII. I even have a chunk of the Berlin Wall sitting next to a German 8mm Cartridge Case I found on the battle field of Verdun. I also have some antique firearms from the period just prior to the ACW. Photo pending.

I also have art prints that focus on Cavalry from the Napoleonic era up through the Indian Wars and I have an interesting Zulu War Print that will be going for framing soon. This only scratches the surface but I thought it would be enough to generate some discussion.

All the best

Dave

Nice Pics Dave.I really like you cavalry print.I am in the process of redoing my office upstairs. My soldiers are basically surrounded by my military libary of books and DVD's.Also i have a WW1 British Lee Enfield rifle and Bayonet.I have lots of bullets and Shrapnel i have found on the Somme including a whole clip of British ammo which i was overjoyed to find.I have a deactivated WW1 British hand grenade and another Bayonet found in Trones wood about ten years ago.I also have an 18lb shell casing and percussion cap which is great as a doorstop!.The amount of shrapnel lying around on the Somme is amazing you can pick up handfuls of it with ease, however i always stop short of digging in anyway as there is a growing problem with this in France and Belgium. My wife even has a jagged piece of Shell as a paperweight in her office!(which she found at Passchendaele)

I have a lovely painting of a Spitfire and would very much like a painting form Waterloo or Trafalgar but will have to see if there is room first as my cabinets take up a lot of wall space.Once i get round to finishing it i will post some pics.Cheers

Rob

Guys

While Kiri and I were in New York for the Symposium - we stayed at the UNION LEAGUE CLUB - a private club founded during the American Civil War.

Inside they had a huge toy soldier collection going back many years. The interesting thing is they displayed the soldiers marching in front of the medals from each of the conflicts that the men represent.

It looked so cool that I am going to do that same type of disply with the New German WWI K&C Soldiers - you might think about it as well.

Hi Guys,

I will post some better pictures of the den when I get a chance. I just was hoping to get some discussion going. I guess everyone is spent from seeing the Louis collection.

Anyway I will pop in later with some more collection shots.

All the best

Hi Dave

Are the pistols still in working condition ,The only other stuff I have
displayed is a few photos and my grand dads medals.
I realy like the idea of displaying prints along with your collection
but for me at this stage I dont have an office at home ,so it restricts what I can display as I would only push my luck so far ' with her indoors'.
looking forward to some more shots.
Regards Rob

Hi Rob,

Yes the pistols are still in good condition. My father bought them back in the early 60's before this stuff became so sought after and had them in a book case for years with a bunch of military history books and when they moved to a smaller house they were put in a storage bin and stayed there for nearly 10 years until I was looking for something else and re-discovered them so he gave them to me. He has some other antigues that will be coming my way sometime so eventually they will all be displayed again. I have other prints up in the den and like I mentioned its the only room where I get to have my "stuff" and she tolerates it.

More soon

All the best

Dave

Dave,

The timing of your post couldn't have been better. We recently moved into our house and I have a room dedicated to be my study. I will be having it renovated in a couple of months and have been seeking ideas on how to set up the decor. I observed a lot from Louis' collection and I often wondered what others display with their soldiers. Currently all my stuff is packed away, but I have plans to hang lots of military art work. I have quite a number of prints in all sizes and plan to rotate them throughout the years. I also love baseball and have many baseball prints. I noticed that Louis had a couple of baseball prints hanging above one of his dioramas. Since Louis can incorporate baseball with his soldiers, I may try to make it work for me too. Anyway, I hope many other forum members post some ideas or pics of what they do as I think it will benefit us all.

Hi Revwarbuff,

I too have some baseball stuff mixed in to my clutter. I will finish moving things around and get some more shots of the den/office. I have been shifting my Durbar display trying to get it to flow better so its coming together. This of course has caused me to adjust in other spots so I will try and pull it all together and snap some pic. I am really looking at getting one of the bombay curios Louis has since they appear to be the best fit for my area so if that happens the office may get another face lift. Anyway I hope to be done with it soon.

All the best

Hi Dave,

Great to hear that you have some baseball stuff mixed in too. For some reason, even though my interest in baseball and its history has taken a back seat to toy soldiers, it still finds its way back in to my life somehow. I still don't know how baseball and the rev war will mix when I finally get my room done. But hearing that you have it in with your Durbar stuff makes me all the more curious to see how you've got that arranged. I can't wait to see your Durbar collection regardless, as you appear to have the biggest interest in that period/war of all us forum members. I imagine that it is quite a collection. I anxiously await whatever pics you can post.

Dave,

Thanks for posting those pictures. Very nice indeed!! I like how you incorporate the militaria in your collection. I will refer to your pictures for ideas when I get to decorating my study in a few months. As for what baseball team I follow, my favorites are (in no special order) the Orioles, Mets and Phillies. I saw some autographed baseballs in your pictures. Who's autographs do you have?

Revwarbuff

I have very little in the way of militaria but I do have my grandfathers WWII uniform - airforce intelligence - interesting too. I also have the flyers wings from a friend of the family who flew a bomber. He was shot down during a mission over Italy - KIA.

Hi Revwarbuf,

Mainly National League eh, well Brad is correct I am a Yankees fan from birth. However I have a soft spot for dem' Os. My wife is a O's fan so you can imagine I get a lot of grief from her and my kids who think mom rocks and Dad is chopped Liver. As for who I have for autographs, I have Mickey Mantle, Harmon Killebrew, Bob Feller, Boog Powell, Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken Jr and Lou Pinnella and a few others. I am also a card collector and have narrowed the field to Cal Ripken and the Yankees. I have a really big pile of other cards that I have been sorting and ebaying in order to finance this hobby.

I am really looking forward to Openning Day, how about you?

The wings you have Gideon are a wonderful relic I am sure that have a great place in your collection. Have you found any neat photo albums lately?

All the best

Dave

I have seen some neat albums but nothing that I've purchased.

Dave

It really is a great relic. I have the letter that describes in a little detail what had happened too. It's really haunting in it's own way. Guys name was Harold Moran. His brother sang at my grandparents wedding in 1941/42.

Dave you have some wonderful prints. I collect "Age of Sail" and "1930's US Battleship" prints.

I have been bored with television tonight and just thought since this thread was of interest to several members that I would show you what I discovered on eBay (for those that have some disposable income that they just have to spend):

Wow that was some interesting stuff on ebay the BMW seemed to be reasonably priced.

Sceic2 What ships do you focus on? I have read a lot of the Aubrey books and the other series Bolito and have enjoyed them a lot. But as a Cav guy I have obvious leanings for my collections.

I have some other prints that arent framed yet one of Rorkes Drift by Keith Rocco and another Stivers print for the ACW I also found a really cool picture from the UK out of the the Punch Magazine of St George riding a tank killing a Dragon with a German Picklehalb on I will have to frame it and put it with my Tank memorabilia.

More pictures of the room soon.
