They Were Expendable is one of my favorites. A real feel for the early war period. Chris

I must have missed "and so on", who's in that one?.........................:wink2:

Always loved it, too. Superb footage of actual PT Boats doing more than just sitting at the dock. I also have a very nice 1st edition copy of the book. Ford hit this one out of the park. -- Al

On Sunday night, TCM has Kelly's Heroes at 8 pm, followed by Where Eagles Dare at 10:30 pm, and for the night owls, Battle of the Bulge follows at 1:30 am Monday. And it continues...
4:30 am Monday - Darby's Rangers
6:45 am Monday - Battleground
9 am Monday - Red Badge of Courage
Then Friendly Persuasion, Men in War, Pride of the Marines, Best Years of Our Lives, The Great Escape (8pm Monday), Bridge on the River Kwai, Breakthrough, and wrapping up with The Naked and the Dead. TCM is simply the best.
For those who might get the MGM cable channel, they are also running a string of good war films on Monday...
7am - Pursuit of the Graf Spee
9:25 am - Shout at the Devil
12:15 pm - Mosquito Squadron
2:05 pm - Beach Red
4:05 pm - Attack!
6:10 pm - Eye of the Needle
8:20 pm - Von Richthofen and Brown
10:15 pm - Bridge at Remagen
12:30 am (Tuesday) - Pork Chop Hill
2:25 am - Beachhead
4:15 am - Paths of Glory

That wraps it up and should keep even the most avid war film buff (me) busier than a one-armed paper hanger. -- Al

While those are all great movies, I don't think they belong to a collection of movies for Memorial Day, our Memorial Day. No disrespect meant to our British and Commonwealth cousins, but they have their own observances to remember and honor their war dead. This is our time to remember and honor ours.

I don't really agree although I do see the point but some of these movies have been on TCM recently and I'd like to have seen some others selected.

A poorly acted movie but a truly compelling war story is on Netflix called Ride the Thunder. It’s ostensibly about Marine John Ripley and his South Vietnamese counterpart in Vietnam. The film makes mild reference to his Raiders. Most notably, his mind boggling heroics at the bridge at Dong Ha. There is no military action shown in the film.

The film has old snippets of John Kerry and Hanoi Jane (Fonda) appearing on talk shows like Dick Cavet, as well as of Ronald Reagan before he was POTUS. The former do not show well. It made me miss RR.

So for those of a certain political bent it will not appeal. But others may appreciate the message, and the support, it shows our troops and their actions in Vietnam. Andy might consider making some homage to Col Ripley, and his South Vietnamese buddy, as part of his Vietnam series, if possible.

Note that I saw this on Wikipedia. Anybody have photos or seen it:

“The story of "Ripley at the Bridge" is legendary in the Marine Corps and is captured in a gripping diorama at the United States Naval Academy.”

There is a book, published in 1996, called 'Bridge at Dong Ha', by John Miller, that relates the action and Ripley's story. -- Al

Where Eagles Dare is probably one of my all time favorite movies. I never tire watching of it.

The Battle of the Bulge is so bad (historically speaking), it's good, if you get my drift.

I just started to watch Battle Of The Bulge and the host noted that Ike came out of retirement to blast the movie for its inaccuracies. I wasn’t aware he had done that.

Although I like Where Eagles Dare, the German fighters at the end of the movie didn’t look right to me and it turns out they are Texan Trainers of the Austrian Air Force. There are a few other mistakes but this one seemed the most egregious to me.

Wow ... I agree with Brad ... {sm2} ... scary. {sm4}
But, my favorite WWII ETO movie is also Where Eagles Dare, good plot twists and turns, good story and nice cinematography.

The Battle of the Bugle is a entertaining movie with memorable music ... <Panzerlied> ... for one example.

Interesting fact that Ike came out so strongly against the movie. Then again, maybe he felt anger at the trivialization of the heroic acts of the US troops to defeat the German offensive. Instead .. we ran them out of gas ??? ^&confuse

I think Ike was peeved that Henry Fonda basically won the BoB in a single handed manner, while Bronson, Ryan, Savalas, etc., got very little credit. Or maybe it was all the open, gently rolling hills of Spain that annoyed him. The movie was garbage and Ike was right.^&grin -- Al

Despite the flaws, I like BOB. The final scene at the fuel dump was terrible. The best part was when the LT surrendered to the German patrol and the SGT saying if the LT stayed cool, he could have taken them all.

The movie was made in what, 1965 or so? For it's time, it was a blockbuster epic, Hollywood type ending. The tanks they used were from the Spanish Army if I am not mistaken, so they filmed the ending in Spain. Also, the real way the Battle of the Bulge ended was pretty anti climatic; the Germans ran out of steam, the attack stalled and the Americans slowly pushed them back, doesn't make for a great movie ending, so they went with the epic tank battle.

As a kid, it was the greatest WWII movie ever, now that movies and series like SPR, BOB, the Pacific and others have come out, this movie is very dated.

Still, it is a pretty iconic movie.
