My family and I just got back from Victoria, British Columbia. If you are ever there, you MUST go to see Miniature World around the side door of the Empress Hotel downtown. This little gem is one of my all-time favorite tourist attractions worldwide, mainly due to the nice array of military dioramas. The thing I love about these dioramas is that they consist mainly of childhood favorite toy soldiers like Britains Swoppets, Herald, Airfix, Timpo and Deetail. I first saw this at the late age of 37 back in the early 2000s, but this time I got to share it with my 9 year old son and his eyes just about popped.
They have huge layouts of battles from the Civil War, the Revolutionary War, the Wild West, WW1, and others and some astonishing WW2 dioramas made with Tamiya vehicles and soldiers, and a really nice 30 Years War siege of a walled city made with Airfix 1/72 conversions from the Robin Hood, Civil War and Revolutionary War sets. There is also a nice "Gulliver's Travels" diorama with hundreds of 40mm Elastolin Landsknechts. They now have a "King Arthur" room with some nice battle setups featuring Italeri medieval figures among others.
There are also very impressive train layouts and they have storybook dioramas and dollhouses to keep the wife and kids happy. If you are ever there, you have to go see it, if only to marvel at the huge collection of vintage 1960s-70s plastic figures on display.
Here is a link to their slideshow featuring some of the dioramas. Pick "Fields of Glory" from the pulldown for the battle dioramas: http://www.miniatureworld.com/nw_min_world.php
