Well I'll be buggered! what a top story, you gotta ask why nobody has made a movie about this, or has someone?. You can just see the Boche browning their pants..brilliant....{sm3}

Fantastic story Rob! I agree with Louis, his medals and story should be displayed in the War Museum. Those were somber days for the French before the balance started to shift towards the allies, and the Germans still had control of the skies above France... It took boldness and bravery to complete such a mission!

Fully agree guys, Flight Lt Gatward must have been one very brave man indeed. Its a wonderful story , it has all the heroics of a War comic from the seventies, but this was the real deal.^&cool{bravo}}

The more you read about this the more it was worth more than a crate of Champers!^&grin Must have been some sight seeing those goose steppers running for their lives, that Beaufighter had pretty heavy armament didn't it?!{eek3}

Brave man indeed. Its not a lot of money for a set of medals with such background to them IMO. I note it does not state in the article that 60 French civilians were executed as an act of reprisal for this action
