Gentle friends, I had plenty to think about on the long drive home from the WCer. I thought about how lucky I was to be doing something that I really love. I love toy trains too but not the hobby. I love this hobby for a lot of reasons. This is a real hands on for me. I can be as creative as I like to any level of detail that I like and it is all good. I can research a project to my hearts desire or dive right in. I usually do both together.:) Yo can do it to the same degree but it can be prohibitively expensive. One needs to be a millionaire. And if you think we are cliquish......

So that brings me to the people. Lots of the older generations in both worlds but there are a really large number of grumpy old men in that hobby:eek: There are some curmudgeons here too , but not as many. Maybe because there are just more train guys. The men and women I meet at the shows seem to be more friendly and welcoming. I am pretty sensitive to this kind of stuff, trust me. The number of people here that I call friends has increased exponentially since joining this forum. We exchange ideas freely. A lot like a family too if you think about it. Sometimes tempers are frayed but where will you not find this? I really like the people I have met here and look forward to meeting them here and at the shows.

There are a lot of characters , yeah, I know I am one of them. But do we not make life more interesting and enjoyable? Life would be boring.

The best thing bout this hobby is that I am happy! How this came into being I do not know when or where, but it is so. I owe it to a lot of you, For the friendship, the camaraderie, the support. I like to give back to this hobby to and when I get the chance I do. Some of you guys know this , and I have also been the recepient of this from others here. Those of you whom have exchanged comments and ideas I consider friends. You all add to the happiness.

More will be revealed on this I am sure. I was quite misty eyed when I thought about this earlier. So for now A warm thank you for your friendship and kindness.

Pat , I have always admired your gentle friends beginning.

KV,

You soft old sod! I'm going to cry in a minute..........But seriously I have to agree with the friendship, the camaraderie, the support this forum has given us. May it long continue.

My best regards

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. Like Pat I see figures and am reminded of how they came to me . The people they were attached to before they came into my possession. So now I get to drink my espresso and type onto this machine that I can communicate around the world. How marvelous is that?

And I am an soft old sod. Irish turf to be exact1:D

Well said KV! On my third espresso (home brewed of course) as I was reading your post. Solid post my friend. Ah, you reminded me about that herse you pointed out that was appropriate for the infamous "KV." Don't let me down. Looking forward to future visits!

All The Best,
Beaufighter

Like Jeff KV your post almost brought a dampness to my eyes and worse I almost believed your musing was genuine and then..................!!!!!!!

Well KV, it was great meeting you in Chicago, and I hope that one of these days you join us at the Symposium for what I think is the most fun you can have outside of Gizelle Bundschen's bed!:D

I have noticed over the years that it is fairly easy to connect with other TS people. We all seem to have at least some shared past while never having seen each other before. Things like:

Watched Zulu 39 times
Were attracted to the little green (or whatever) people when we were small
Threw out something you wish you hadn't, worth a lot now
Went into the TS Closet in teens
Came out of the TS Closet in middle-age
Our reading list is practically all history
Watch our armies lose battle after battle against Wife E. Lee
etc.

Besides that I have thought they are a very good group of people. I have had very few bad experiences in buying & selling. It is a smaller world, and people tend to be in it for life, so maintaining a good rep is important. There well may be more to it then that, but its hard to define.

Completely sincere you silly sod.:p

But these are the kinds of things I am talking about. Louis it was very nice to have met you. I am planning to go to Chicago in 09 with the gf. I may have been mistaken about not bringing her to this last show. She really is pretty cool.

When I look at the Figarti figure I will be thinking of that day and having breakfast with Rick and Steven. I will always think that Rick and Steven are class acts. It was nice to spend the morning with them and hear their thoughts along wih Beaufighter too. Not too mention this figure is really cool! But I will always think of time well spent. Whilst drinking my espresso too!

Hi Vamp,

Yours is a wonderful post. I agree with your comments concerning the camaraderie, support, and friendships that evolve in this hobby. And,...these shared human experiences add a value to our hobby experience that cannot be calculated. I, too, experience the same sense of appreciation, warmth, and fulfillment that you describe. Thank you for expressing yourself so sensitively and allowing us to participate in the pleasure and happiness that you have discovered within our hobby. I am proud to have you as a friend.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

I must agree with every word KV posted.Last year the support i received from this forum, from people all over the world most of whom i'd never even met was stunning. It meant so much to both of us.This forum is a great place and this Hobby has introduced many new friends to me and allowed me to share my collecting with you all.

Well said KV!

Rob

KV: Thank you for the nice post and reflections on this hobby or addiction. I know before I found Treefrog's forum that I felt like the only one who was interested in military hobbies and collecting figures. I later found two nice friends in my area who also collect figures and military history books. We have a good time when we get together. Thanks to Pete and Shannon who started this forum along with Brad's and Dave's help.

I was hesitant when I first signed on but in the last couple of years I found daily enjoyment reading posts and increasing my knowledge on history and collecting figures. No magazine could give such instant information along with the new products and opinions. I never realized how it became part of my life. The people on this forum became friends and I know how much I appreciate the members and manufacturers who keep us well informed.

I know last year when I had major surgery and fought for my life for three weeks that I was amazed at all the get well messages on the forum. I appreciated the concern for a member who was in danger at the time and believe all the get well messages helped me recover. Anyhow I look forward for more years of reading the forum. Thanks John
