Sudan expert Col. Mike Snook on the Victorian Wars forum mentioned that Wolseley chose grey uniforms for the British forces during the Ashanti Wars of the 1870s and this may have served as a precedent for the Sudan. Mike has suggested a link to Wolseley's admiration in the 1860s for the Confederacy and its leaders whom he met with during the Civil War as referenced in a book on Wolesely and the American Civil War quoted below with example of Ashanti War uniform.

Interesting little item here Randy. Both the bits about Wolseley being in Canada to make preliminary arrangements for war with the US and also the possible inspiration for these gray garments worn on the Ashanti campaign. If I remember correclty, even the Black Watch traded in their usual kit for gray trousers for this one.

Wolseley's experiences with the river navigators is Canada also lead to him raising a Canadian contingent to help the British up the nile. I believe this was the first time that Canadians were involved with a military campaing outside of there own borders. I have one illustration which shows men in cowboy hats, not slouch hats, by the Nile!

Martin.
P.s. here is a link to a book on the subject.

Some more pictures (one is an enlargement of yours)

Note in the color image-the CV were issued dark grey tunics or smocks and trousers and blue shirts.

John Jenkins is currently reading the book on the CV that you cite Martin so perhaps we will see some of these as figures with a whaleboat:)

To be honest it's one of those subjects I considered but wasn't sure if it would be popular.
