Starting some new Spartans. I thought I would try this from the beginning and show how this is done. So some flash material (minimal) was removed. Then completely undercoated with black primer. Next step I learned from Compton Creel is to drybrush the details with white to get the details to stand out. This is going to help a lot.

Vamp is that a German doing push-ups ? and if so i hope he 100 good ones or he won't make it to be a Spartan :p:)

Michael,

I need this thread, I bought 10 Spartans from Harold at the San Antonio show.

I was going to call Fubar and ask him his process, but I have always thought yours were beautiful too.

Do you wash them first and if so in what?

Do you select and set the pose before your primer and if so,

what kind of glue do you use to set the pose?

I noticed they are all in different poses now that they are primered..............why?

What brand of paint are you using the paint over the primer?

Thanks for this thread, I'm watching.................:D

Hail Einar! That falschirmjaeger was a bad German. No Schnitzel!:p Just a new hope figure that my dad gave me. I was on a spree assembling figures.

Glad I can help. These were pretty clean so I did not wash them:eek: I was in a hurry;) But when I do wash them it is in either dish soap or vinegar. And a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

So far all of them are left loose to pose later on. this also helps get areas that are hard to reach. With these figures there are a lot of them.:p The different poses are from me trying to get primer everywhere. The black acts as shadow if I miss anything. I did dry brush them white to help pick out detail but this is not so good of an idea when you consider the black kilt part. Fortunately only the three were done this way.

I have primarily used Vallejo paints as the pigment is very fine and will not obstruct fine detail. I will be using this on the 15mm stuff as well.

Okay Michael,

I'm hanging on every word.:D:D:D

Are you saying TO white drybrush everything but the black kilt,

or,

DON'T drybrush at all in afterthought?

Also thanks for doing this thread, I have always admired your Spartans.

Mike just throwing my two cents worth in :).
But i do pretty much the same thing as Vamp....I undercoat in black then i dry brush on all the brass then tunic then flesh and leather parts they are rather easy troops to paint

Yeah everything but the kilt. Because then the kilt has to be repainted and then there is more paint build up. If one recalls the kilt has white spots in the pleats.

Michael,

Okay,

I understand, highlight with white drybrush everything except the kilt.

Take your time with this thread, cause I may have questions if you don't mind.

I appreciate your taking the time to explain in detail your process.

They are easy, sort of. What makes them easy is the depth of the detail. What makes them time consuming is the wealth of detail.

I have to make a confession here. I painted the red parts first. The skin tone base I use at this time is light brown from Vallejo. Remember we want to start darker than the finish tone. Next I will add some shadow and highlights to the skin or do the armour. I love the brassy parts. I will post some pics of the work done so far tomorrow. my time.

For the most part I try to paint in a manner that goes with the metal Conte figures. I think the style is attractive and emotionally stimulating. Red, white, black and brass. These colors stand out and as I said stirring.

I have enjoyed painting these figures for commissions and gifts. These guys will be available for sale when I am done.:)

I think I will do the brass and the kilts next. Love doing the brass. It really makes the figures stand out. As with the other colors this is a base coat. What will follow will be shading and more highlights. Ain't this fun?:D After that I will work on the plummage and kilt.

Hi Vamp,

Thank you so much for starting this thread! I am learning a great deal from your step by step presentation. Please continue with your postings as I want to learn more!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Michael,

They are starting to look good.

Thanks again for doing this thread and thanks for the detailed explanantion with photos.

Where do I buy the Vallejo paints?

For the red on the sleeves and the kilts, is there only one shade of red in the Vallejo set?

You said, "Remember we want to start darker than the finish tone."

Please expand on this statement, I'm not sure what you mean.

You said, "Next I will add some shadow and highlights to the skin or do the armour."

Do you mean you add the wash details before you finish the entire figure?

Please expand on this?

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, please list by name or number the exact Vallejo paint you use on each part.

Thanks again.

I'm getting anxious to start on mine.

Mike there are several reds. One is Carmine the other is flat red. Then there is a purpleheart red. I love this color. In a thinned tone, (wash) I use it on a lot of figures to match the finish tone on K&C. But, the new pics

Getting back to your questions. I would go to the Vallejo website and check for a dealer near you.

Going for a deeper base tone or a lighter one depends on you and your preference. What I am saying is the base tone is going to be different then when we started. Maybe I should say brighter? We are going to chage the base color with shading, then highlighting and then a wash or two.

In the next shots I did do some shading and highlights I think. We will see.

OK by now I have added shading to the skin and also a thinned out highlight. For the shade I used a darker brown mixed with the light brown for a more subtle shadow. Then a thinned sunny skin wash for the highlights. I built it up with several coats.

On the legs in this shot you might notice how subtle the shading is. It still stands out. The sunlight is washing out the subtleties.

In these shots all the skin tones have been finished with the exception of the wash (smokeyink). I will make a list of colors used Mike.
