Movie: BATTLE OF MIDWAY (1 Viewer)

Tom,

Seriously? That sucks man...went and saw it with the WIFE! Can you believe she went? She liked it and so did I. There is a kid on youtube who posted a video about the battle in so much detail (with graphics and all) that I watched prior to the movie to get up to speed on my history.

Overall a good flick with no too much lovy-duby scenes like Pearl Harbor. A little bit more grittier on both side the Americans and the Japanese. The CGI is amazing.

Finally, got to see the movie MIDWAY (2019) today on Amazon Prime .... and WOW .... ^&grin {sm3} Wonderful.
I loved it. +++++

The CGI was excellent. a variety of story lines, well acted and historically accurate (for a movie). Woody Harrelson did a good job as Adm. Nimitz as well as Dennis Quaid playing Chester "Bull" Halsey.

Once again it proves to me that (professional :p :p) movie critics will always view a war movie with their heads up their liberal a$$.

As with John's wife, my wife watched it with me and also really enjoyed it.
AND .. this is the woman who yawns then falls asleep when I watch most of my war movies.

From the opening scenes to the end credits it moved along at a good pace with no unnecessary dialog or silly stories to distract from what the movie was about … "THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY".

Yes, they did start of with the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Jimmy Dolittle Raid as well as the Battle of the Coral Sea as they helped to define the importance that Midway held in the WWII Pacific strategy and wrest control of the Pacific from Jap control.

I will own this one when it hits Blue Ray.

I agree Larry, this is a good movie, I saw it yesterday at the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the acting was first rate as was the choice of actors that played the historical figures. It was mostly historically accurate as well although I got the impression that the US carrier force was only 2 (Enterprise and Yorktown) and not 3 with the Hornet as was the US carrier force at Midway. Maybe I missed the Hornet being mentioned or seen in the movie, I may have to watch it again!

The movie could also have been a little longer with more time devoted to the battle of Midway. Some parts I thought were a bit rushed and a little more time could have told the stories much better. I agree the other battles helped define the importance of Midway, hence why I reckon they should have made the movie longer to accommodate more scenes and stories in Midway like showing some of the planes taking off from Hornet and Yorktown, dialogue and action on those ships (especially the Yorktown being hit) and other events from the battle. The close formation of the Jap ships as mentioned in other posts on this thread was another inaccuracy although it made it a spectacle for the movie, especially the high altitude shots and US planes attacking the Jap fleet at low level.

Overall though it was a well made movie.

Saw the movie on demand last night. Thought it was pretty good, and the CGI special effects were fantastic!:salute::

Glad that you liked the movie. Here is a link to the all the 27 ships, (both Japanese and United States vessels) that were involved in the battle.
I will have to re-watch it myself. I (knew) the hornet was 1 of 3 carriers so I also may have missed its mentioning in the movie.

I would have liked to see more of the battle sequences when the Japanese attacked the Yorktown and the fight to save her.

Also it is seldom mentioned that the Japanese Naval High command didn't believe reports that the USS Yorktown was even there (or afloat) at Midway. They truly believed she was sunk or scuttled at the Battle of the Coral Sea. This lead to a Japanese tactical misinterpretations of the US's Naval strength and possible attack. No one could believe that Yorktown was able to be sent back into battle so soon. This was mentioned in the movie from the US Navy's side but failed to show this a strategic failure from the Japanese standpoint.

Ya' there, there could have been a lot more added, but then the movie would have stretched out to long for the "attention span" of most Americans. :redface2:

Saw it today on demand and thought it very well done. The CGI was really good (they had me with the first Dauntless, even if the markings were wrong). Liked the use of the correct historical personalities and the actors playing these parts were superb. Thought Best and Layton were particularly well done. Caught the error with the Doolittle B-25's being the wrong mark as the Doolittle raid used the B-25B while the movie showed B-25H's, (I think, as ID was hard with the limited views I got of them). The accuracy, overall, was pretty good as they even got the Japanese carriers correct in relation to port and starboard side islands. I think the movie would have benefited from a little more historical perspective as to just how important and game changing the victory was and maybe some salute to the numbers lost in action by the two sides. Two thumbs up overall. -- Al

I just saw this movie. A very good movie which tries to stick to the facts. The cast is pretty good. I enjoyed the CGI but do question the near distance of planes weaving in and out between each other in dogfights.

Of the epic Pacific War movies, this is definitely superior to the earlier "Midway" and "Pearl Harbour" movies but I think that "Tora Tora Tora" tops them all for its superb casting and overall movie direction.

Tora, Tora, Tora is hard to beat for accuracy in terms of the movies and is certainly unbeatable in terms of live action shots without CGI, not to mention it is beautifully shot. The cinematography during the Japanese aircraft launching in the pre-dawn light are scenes that have always stuck in my head. The movie is a classic example of the genre done right. -- Al

I just saw MIDWAY and I was disappointed.
I thought if the movie had removed the Pearl Harbor and Doolittle raid, it could have spent more time building up suspense for the Battle of Midway itself. The Charlton Heston movie did a good job of telling the story building up to the Battle of Midway, but ruined the movie with the inaccurate combat footage and the soap opera subplot.

It's too bad the Bruce McKenna (BAND OF BROTHERS) Midway movie was cancelled. His movie was a full-length version of an episode he wrote for THE PACIFIC that was not used because it was too expensive.

Larry, you are as usual on spot as to your comments on the Japanese mistake on intel concerning the Yorktown. Much is always said about Nagumo’s errors on deciding to switch ordinance on his planes, but the Japanese belief right after the battle began that the US navy had at maximum 2 carriers, the Hornet and the Enterprise in the area, was also a decisive factor in the outcome.

Buying it was your first mistake.

Watching it apparently was your second.

Hell,If I woulda known ,I coulda saved a few bux by buying your unloved copy..yes/no?

I wouldn't waste my money or my time on that movie...………..way too much CGI, plus I'm more of a land combat guy, sea/air, not so much...…………...but to each his own.

I saw the movie tonight with my wife and son and contrary to what I said previously, I rather enjoyed it. I freely admit I was wrong. As with any Hollywood production there will be some inaccuracies but the action scenes were very well done and the acting reasonably good. As someone said it’s better to have had this made than not.
