Salvete Omnes!
Every year my Latin class participates in a large classical themed competition. There are a umber of categories, which include models, clothing, and art. Last year I placed second overall with my solid brass full scale replica of a Roman laurel wreath. This year, I chose to make a diorama of a Roman camp and road, including a figure.
I want to thank TomB for the inspiration: I used toothpicks and Sculpy to make a figure of a Roman auxiliary-not completely accurate, as this is the first figure I have ever sculpted. He came out a bit big, but I am not displeased with the result. I also made a Roman mile marker. I would like to apologize in advance to First Legion for copying large parts of their sculpts in the making of this figure.

Note the completely accurate cross-section of the Roman road- it has all the actual layers!

"You've taken the first step into a larger universe." Well done, Sandor! Now, what did you learn, and what will you apply to your next sculpt? :D

Prost!

Good job Sandor.....That is a very good start....time and practice and a bit of imagination and away you go.....I started trying to model 10 yrs ago...taken me awhile to get the hang of it... it aint easy....you have to stick at it ...... dont get discouraged....just plod along ....taken me ages to get to my standard...and I hope ...God willing....to be able to keep learning.......If I can help you, let me know....TomB....PS......if you can draw a little it helps to draw several time's..... even more...what you are trying to make.... it sorta gits the brain into gear.. even if you cannot draw...time to start...it helps to get the eye and the hands to work together....dont always work but it is worth a try.......Tom

Thanks all!
Brad- I learned that I need to do things in components. Next time, I will make every limb/foot/hand/weapon separately, from a photo of the real thing. I think I will also try to use more wire and possibly even glue soaked cloth.
Tom-I do draw-quite a lot, and all military. In fact, before toy soldiers, when I was around 8-10, I would make armies of paper cutouts of my drawings. I am not bad, but with practice I will improve. Hopefully, the drawing will help familiarize me with the curves and proportions of the human figure. Next I may try a Napoleonic Partisan or sailor.
Jack-Gratias tibi!
Wayne-thanks: there is the slate-like stone in my area which is perfect for cliffs stonework.
Mike-its well done because I learned the techniques from a group of two masters- I wonder who they are?

Thanks all,
Sandor

Nice job!^&cool Keep at it the more you do the better your work will get and you,ll learn something new with each new project.
TSSD has some nice cheap plastic Romans if your looking for more figures for the project. They should paint up nice and being plastic you can convert them to new poses also.
Sculpting your own figures takes time and is real tricky to get the anatomy right, there are web sites out there that can help you out a lot if your interested in going further into this. I have tried my hand at this also and know how tricky it is.
Keep at it and you,ll learn and your sculpts will improve, and do a lot of web searching on the subject and check out You tube, they have videos that will help.

Look into how to make an armature out of wire to get the body just right and check out anatomy sites also.

Again nice job! The Dio looks great!
