Being a collector of Napoleonic figures, I have been very lucky that I didn’t have to collect aeroplanes as part of my toy soldier collection, because they hadn’t been invented for warfare in that era.

A few years back I got some castings by French maker MHSP and one of the sets available was figures for Battle of Fleurus (26 June, 1794). In that set was a team of troops from the Aerostatic Corps ( the world’s first AIR FORCE) which was established in April 1794. They feature 3 figures carrying the gondola for the balloon L'Entreprenant and an officer directing the movement. This was used in the battle where the balloon remained afloat for nine hours, during which Coutelle and Antoine Morlot took notes on the movements of the Austrian Army, dropping them to the ground for collection by the French Army, and also signalled messages using semaphore.

Other figures in the set are General Jean-Baptiste Jourdan, his ADC, a Representative of The People, a standard bearer from the 36[SUP]th[/SUP] Demi-Brigade and volunteer infantryman.

There are another couple of figures available in this set, a gunner, a cannon, a mounted hussar and Jourdan’s horse, and I may add them if I can find them.

I hope you like my painting and I hope to set them all up on a diorama base later.

Hi John,

A very interesting set! Looks like you would want to complete all the pieces in the set. I noticed that the cannon is on a long carriage, making it a captured Austrian gun.
