Shannon, sure sounds as though you're making the most of your trip. Glad you guys are having fun. You mentioned "...Lucila who is in charge of painting elephants". Can you elaborate on the elephant figures? I collect elephants of which one is K&C's Silk Road elephant (a spectacular figure). Always looking for others to join the collection.

If you haven't seen Beau Geste Delhi Durbar elephants you are in for a treat!

They have quite a few elephants. Here is the link to the whole Durbar line:

It is because the designs are so intricate that only Ana and Lucila of all 12 painters do the painting. They are not cheap (between $399 and $499 a piece) but you can see why. And they weigh between 6-8 lbs each!

Shannon,

Thanks so much for keeping us informed about your very, very interesting trip. Also, thanks for posting the pictures of the elephants. Please forward my compliments to Ana and Lucila. Their painting of the elephants is absolutely wonderful!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Nicely said!!! Only problem now is my six year old wants me to buy him the elephants. He has been helping me with my new diorama and has been a super helper. I am trying to pass along my passion to him, I think it working. :) Michael

 Wow, intricate painting is right. Very, very nice elephants sets. I never noticed those before. I can image after hours of painting with that level of detail, Ana and Lucila feel the eyes burn. They are rather pricey but you can tell why. Ana and Lucila are very talented. I like the thought of the hefty weight but 6-8 lbs, I'd be afraid the glass shelves in my curio wouldn't be able to handle it.

Thanks for the pictures Shannon, I'll have to give these some thought.

Hi Victory,

If you like the elephants you should also check out the ones produced by Marlborough for their Durbar Series they are also quite nice. In my Durbar display pics under the Britians thread you can see one near the Bullock Cart.

Sommerset (Ron Ley) makes really cool elephants, including ones pulling guns and limbers and carrying maxim guns (modelled on the old K&C Maxim guns) on their backs. They also make amazing Camels. There was also a gentleman named Luzinsky (my spelling may be off) who made amazing Elephants and Camels a few years ago.

I too have seen the ones from Sommerset. They are also quite nice!

Dave

Thanks for the tip, Dave, on the Marlboroughs. Are they painted in gloss?
Louis, is there a website to view the Sommersets. I did a google search and turned up nothing.

I'll give you Ron Ley of Sommerset's e-mail: somersetltd@earthlink.net. I'm sure he can get you the website address. You might want to check with Jim Hillestad at the Toy Soldier Museum (he's a K&C dealer, you can get his info off the website). He has an excellent selection of Sommerset and Luzinski products.

This is no big secret but Ron Ley's stuff is incredible. At Chicago, we saw his Lawrence of Arabia line and all his other ranges. Unbelievably cool.

I spoke to Ron in Chicago and his stuff is awesome. I believe his website is www.somersetltd.com.
