Great tune perfectly sung by Nancy Wilson... but I digress.

Got these two large flats from Fechner I think. I took them out and probably will have a go at them.

Sails made of silk,,, Probably woven in China,:)

Simple washes to define colour harmony.

Mostly done I've ptd them to represent Dutch East Indies VOC ships famous for plying on the spice trade.

Came across a dreadful event when the VOC ship Batavia sunk off Australia's western Coast and the survivors were massacred by a few madmen. Apparently a well known Aussie historical event. They even created a replica of the ship and Russell Crowe has bought the rights to make a movie about it.

We have the hull of that ship in our Maritime Museum here in Fremantle. It was excavated in the 1970's, and then reassembled and is on permanent exhibition in a historic building here :

This is a link from the museum about it's history

Read that history and you will know about the perils that seafarers undertook crossing the world in search of wealth and goods, only to end up on these barren shores.

If you get to Fremantle, I'd love to show you around this wonderful site.

I've painted the bkgd. Waiting for the oils to dry before I affix the ship.

And the ship has been attached. I put some backing putty behind the ship.

Great creation {sm3}{bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}The backdrop landscape is a real masterpiece, very good idea the curved cartoon card.

Hi John and Poppo,

thanks for your kind inputs and comments.

Yes, I specifically modelled in the Baltic Oak planking pattern on the ship's hull. Hope that was obvious :):):).

The background was surprisingly quite easy to paint. I used winsor blue for the sky and ultramarine blue for the sea. I also snipped off the front part of the stand for the ship and added more putty to simulate the waves. I also used impasto painting to model in the waves.

I enlarged the viewing window to show more of the background. Now the ship appears to be sailing in a sea, not a bathtub :):):)

Nicely done. I enjoyed watching the steps involved in creating this artistic piece. Looks great!
