My Try @ Photography - King and Country Collections (4 Viewers)

attachment.php

A sneak preview... I am post-processing these figures, could take a while :salute::

KingCountry252abcd.jpg

Among them is Obestgruppenfuhrer “Sepp” Dietrich commander of the 1st SS Panzer Corps (A). Next to him is Brigadefuhrer Fritz Witt (B), Commanding Officer of the 12th SS “Hitlerjugend”.

Next to them are two other senior Waffen SS officers (C) (D)

These 4 figures are really - STUNNING I must say !

As usual fantastic work. Despite your fine tutorial earlier in this thread do you think you
could once again share a word about the placement/position of the two flash-lights in your setup?
I simply can not undestand how they are NOT going to effect the exposure of the entire picture.
I do get the point of "flashing away" the background of the picture by directing the flash onto
the white background - but the flashlight will illuminate more than just the background???
Isn't it bound to reflect into the foreground towards the camera as well?
How do you control the proper exposure time? Measureing the amount of light necessary for
photographing the figure with just the light from the three static lamps seems obvious but how do you control the extra light of the flashlights? Sorry about the bother .....
Kind regards
Wolfgang

If you are referring to above image, that is is taken from an iPHONE 4S. That one is a quickie shot using 2 iKEA Table lamps to shine at the 4 figures - no flash used at all

SetupA.jpg

For the "white" background shot the flash are position behind the figure over a white A3 80gm paper. To "contain" flash flare the items 1, 2 and 3 are used to "block" the flares

Below image would give a better idea

SetupC.jpg

Some simple post-processing I will get this (quite close to the original raw image captured by the camera)....

SetupD.jpg

I use 2 UNITS of NIKON SB700, power set to 1/4

For the camera NIKON 5100 DX with a 85mm NIKON DX Micro Lens

Exposure 1/25 or 1/30 @ f16 set to MANUAL focus and VR (stabilization) on the lens turned off {sm4}

The trick is getting the image sharped and focused (if the captured image is blurry no amount of post-processing will help). For that I used a simple trick TIPS - How to Focus Miniatures WITHOUT Using the NIKON DG-2

Hi,
thank you very much for your quick reply. That was very kind of you and I guess I got it now!
Did not understand the positioning and role of the velvet covered blocks in your setup at first. But your answer made it very clear to me now.
I was searching the internet but could not find any "How To" that matches your results.
So again thank you very much for your kind help. Hope to see more of your fantastic photographs here in the future. Your pictures are truly outstanding :salute::
Kind regards
Wolfgang

DM101, Love the break down that you showed us for your Photo skills. I agree 110% that camera flash is bad for our purposes. Good, strong over head lighting is the way to go !

I always love seeing what you'll photograph next. Esp. like the photo studio shot that offers some tips for aspiring toy soldier photographers.
Awesome shots as always!

Hi DM101, Great looking photos again and again. Also like the "Comparison" pics as well ! :salute::

Noticed anything "wrong" with the KnC sentry box ^&confuse - it seems the strips are painted up-side down in the wrong direction {sm2}

What do you use to put all of the views on one image? I always to take multiplel views and would like to do this as well.
Thanks
Zach

One thing.....In the waffen ss they didn't call an officier " sir". The waffen ss was a kind of "army of the people", with equality between the officiers and the low ranks, opposite to the wehrmacht in which was a distance between them and the aristocratic titles made that ex. a colonel was called " baron" by his men.So no formalities at all between officiers and privates, they could even tutoyer.... Sometimes, in the waffen ss, a chief could be a simple non-comissioned officer, sometimes elected by the troops because of his braveness.
