NAP0198-NAP0203 British 12th Light Dragoons (2 Viewers)

Aggressive postures...slicing infantry (or artillerists)....fighting opposing cavalry...sounds like a wonderful recipe for the British Heavies. ;)
Well that too of course. Bring them on please Matt, I have been ready for some slicing for quite a while.:D H'mmm I wonder if I am now getting closer to my new avatar source painting by any chance?:D

FL has probably the finest miniatures on the market today but I have to be honest in that I will never be able to collect any range they will ever have.A figure here a figure there maybe but at $120 a pop for a mounted figure and now around $55 for foot they are are out of my league.Bless you guys that can afford them.
Mark

To be honest Mark, some of us simply have to settle for less quantity to get more quality. These figures have totally changed my approach to this hobby and the number of themes I can pursue. Still they are well it. BTW, I was happy and relieved to see the newest FL Napoleonic infantry (Nassau) come out at $45 still.

I understand that Bill but for someone who collects Napoleonic such as yourself you know you want lots of regiments and lots of figures.:D

Yes, I have to want less now and be more selective which is a bummer but ........ I do look forward to what I can get.

I'm glad for you Bill.I can tell that you really enjoy your collection.

These figures look amazing!
The tease of heavies is also exciting as are all the FL releases.
These miniatures are not inexpensive and $50 or $120 is a lot of money, but these miniatures compare VERY favorably with custom painted miniature kits painted in Russia or elsewhere. Those are 2-3 times the amount of the FL offerings or more.
My favorite Napoleonic miniatures were Metal Models kits, but I stopped painting many years ago and the FL minitures can be displayed with custom painted Metal Moels miniatures perfectly.
It is hard to make a statement in 54mm Napoleonics, as it is a super-saturated field, but First Legion is simply routing the field with these amazing miniatures.
Que siga la fiesta!

Agreed, my hat is off to Bill, he's one of the most avid Napoleonics collectors I know, so I am always happy when a new range comes out that he gets excited about.

As big of a fan as I am of WWII and ACW, there is just something about Napoleonics that does it most for me.

Thanks to Bill, Jeff and others on this forum, I've revisited my Napoleonic collection the past year or so and I really appreciate that, I've neglected it for a long time and have now ramped it back up again..............

Marco, I think you are creating a luxury problem for yourself and I sense that you look for a pretext not to buy any FL. If I understand you properly, you want to have multiples - so instead of buying 5x 1fig of manufacturer X, with FL, you can only buy 3x 1fig - correct? So instead of an army - at full display !!!! - of 500 of manufacturer X, you can only display 300 of FL - correct? For me that is a luxury problem!

It's all your choice I am afraid - as Bill said "quantity over quality" - you obviously chose the former and should feel lucky as there is a lot of that out there! So I don't understand that whining and complaining about prices! I haven' t won the lottery either but still am able to build in an intelligent way a collection that I like. Now you being at least equally intelligent to me, can do the same, and obviously do it by buying other stuff than FL - so you should be happy or else change your collecting habits as nobody else can do that for you.

Warmest personal regards
Steve

It's not really a luxury problem Steve but I'm sort of a diorama type person and you do have to have a few figures to make it look right.I guess what made me think that the prices seem to be jumping up fast is the price of the mounted figures and that new Russian set at $169.95.That's quite a chunk for 3 figures. Now I'm not a cheapskate or anything as I've collected figure kits and have had them painted and I've paid $130-$150 for one figure. But they are few and far in between, but if you are going to collect a range in the TS world you want to get more than a couple figures.I just think FL is eventually going to be for higher echlon collectors and that might be a mistake. The TV manufacters have sold HD tv's for some very high prices but they said to make the big profits they have to sell to the masses and the price range for the masses (me) is $700-$1000.I realize that the toy soldier market is different ( much smaller market) but sometimes selling more for less is the smart thing to do_One thing I'll say about FL is that while not being around for long they have made quite a splash and the threads about them is never boring.Best of luck to them and if they ever make anything I collect I'll buy 1 or 2:D
Mark

aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, you are not even a Nap/WWII collector?! and still you are complaining about the price..that is very altruistic of you, thank you :)

maybe you can thus collect a biblical theme, I know a manufacturer who has just launched such a range :D

to be serious again, what ranges are you interested in, apart from FIW?

I've collected Crusaders,ACW,19th cen.colonial,vikings.I've also been a big supporter FL as I told painters on another forum about FL 90mm Saladin figure.I just don't want to see FL price themselves out of business.Just because I don't collect them doesn't mean I can't voice an opinion about them as so many do here about other companies.

I'm not going to get into protracted discussions about pricing, however, I'll advise you this. If at some point we make a range that you do find yourself interested in, buy a figure or two. Take them and put them on the shelf next to your other figures. I'm quite certain you'll see where the extra money went to. ;)

For what it's worth, I've never received feedback from a customer after receiving First Legion figures that they felt they were too expensive. On the contrary, the feedback we constantly get is that our customers are amazed that we can produce figures of such quality at such a low price.

I'm not necessarily directing this at you Mark, but it's typically people that don't collect our figures that go on and on about the price. Those that do collect them know exactly what their money is going to get them.

And yes, you've always been a supporter of our figures and always had extremely nice things to say about them, so I thank you for that. But I think if you had some of our figures, you'd at least understand, if not accept, the pricing. Our figures are still by far the best priced toy soldiers in the world from a quality to price perspective and we operate with by far the lowest figure cost to retail price multiple of any other company. The bottom line is our figures are as good as they are because we invest a lot in them. We simply can't afford to try to match prices with other toy soldier companies and still maintain our much higher quality - if we did, THAT would put us out of business.

Best,

Matt

I switched my entire Napoleonic figure collection to First Legion, I can only afford 1 cavalry figure from each release and about three infantry figures to show the uniforms. The artillery takes some planning. I know that this doesn't help people that build dioramas, but the quality of first Legion made me change my collecting habits. Just my two cents worth.

Matt,
I know you get tired of people seeming to complain about something about your figures/products all the time but people that haven't collected your products still have a right to say something without be accused of whining all the time. These people (myself included)must be interested in your products or we wouldn't give a s..t what you charge. All the companies have had price increases it's just that at first glance the pricing seem to jump up a lot.I will promise you this even though I don't collect the ranges you have I will buy at least one figure (after I pay off some Christmas bills) so if you have to hear my "whining" at least you will make a couple of bucks on it.:DThis is my last word on this, time to move on.By the way your Dragoons look great.Best regards.

Hi, Mark,

Please note that I never said you or anyone else for that matter was whining! I agree, that people who don't collect our figures have a right to say whatever they want - about the price, about whether they like them or hate them, about anything they want really. And, as you've pointed out, they certainly do and aren't shy about it. This is a public forum and is meant for discussion, it goes with the territory. I was merely pointing out that it is rarely the people who actually collect our figures that say much about the price. It seems to be folks who don't collect them who have issue with the price. And those people didn't collect them at $35 or $45/$50, so price obviously isn't the deciding factor for those folks.

Tell you what, save your money for now. I have a sneaking suspicion that within a few months you'll be able to order something from us that you are interested in. So save up and buy a few figures at that point that you'll be buying because they are a period that perhaps you want to collect. I think you'll be pleased with them.

Anyway, Happy New Year everyone!!! It's New Year's Day here in the Far East, just around midnight for our European friends, and the USA parties are just getting rolling. So enjoy everyone and drive safely. ;)

I got mine first group today and I am overwhelmed with how nice these are.:D I hope to post a more complete set of observations with pictures as soon as I have the chance. Suffice it to say that they are really Russian class beauties.:cool: More soon.

Be interested to hear more of your opinion. I have been debating on these for a few weeks.

I think these are the best of the mounted figures to be released to date. The figures are just amazing. I was wondering if these were done by a different sculptor then the other mounted troops.

I should mention all this is based on having seen only one figure, the NCO. I will be ordering more soon hopefully.
