Continuing with our all Napoleon's Europe them this month, we have expanded our coverage of Great British troops for the Battle of Waterloo with sets NAP0524-NAP0528 British Congreve Rocket System and Crew. Initially designed in 1804 by William Congreve, the Rockets were primarily used during the Napoleonic wars by the Royal Navy. Slowly their use was expanded to the army to include the formation of the 1st and 2nd Rocket Troops. Wellington, however, was not a big believer in their use so at Waterloo under the command of Captain Whinyates, they were used alongside six pounder guns with the Rockets essentially replacing the Troop's howitzers. 52 such rockets were fired in the defense of La Haye Sainte, most would agree to little effect. It was a unique and novel weapon and one very much associated with Waterloo, so we have decided to add it our figure range. Along with 3 RHA crew on Foot and a Mounted RHA Private, we hope you agree that it's beauty as shown here far outweighs it's actual historical value at the battle!

Do we consider the mounted dude a "flag bearer"? ie - Do I HAVE to buy it! hahahaha
I think I must! :salute::

Gunners without guns !!!!! ??????

Yes indeed, .... modern warfare used 200 years ago, the old Chinese invention taken up by the British.

Great to see.

He's not a flag bearer, he's carrying rocket canes with a pennant on it. :(

Interestingly the French were fooled into thinking that they were light dragoon carrying lances !!!!! :)

Nice set

That's how Sharpe tricked the French into thinking he had cavalry in Sharpe's Enemy! {sm4}

No, no no! He's a flag bearer because Zach only buys flag bearers. :smile2:

Thanks for that info .....

does Zach know that Artillery doesn't carry flags ???

Their colours are their guns and all guns carry a coat of arms, and so gunners won't surrender their colours (guns) .......

maybe Zach should also buy guns ???? :) :) :)

As always with guns and gunners,John is spot on about the flags.He would also tell you that the corporal should be called a bombardier,the equivalent rank for the Royal Artillery.Having said this,I agree that this is a terrific set.My only disappointment is that there are not more crew-also a couple of horses with holders.The rocket troops were favourites of HRH the Prince of Wales and he put pressure on his brother(the Duke of York at the Horse Guards) and the Board of Ordnance to send the Rockets to the Peninsula.Wellington was not a fan,claiming they were useful only for scaring horses,but he did admit that they came superbly equipped-wagons,forges etc all brand new and their horses,both draught and riding, of top quality.

Although I don't have many Napoleonic's. I really do like this set. It is unique.

Are any British dealers planning to stock these?
(I suspect the current pound/dollar exchange rate may play a part!)

One of the things that I really enjoy about this hobby is how much history I can learn from certain sets. For instance, I had no idea that this rocket system was used during the Napoleonic wars. Therefore, I thought that this set was pretty unique and decided to purchase it. As usual, I was amazed by the detail in the figures put forth by First Legion. Also, I would like to thank Mark for giving me the idea to use a football display case as means to protect and display my figures. Finally, I have a way to keep my soldiers safe from the hands of curious children in my house. I hope that you enjoy the photos!

I love the display, a nice self contained scene, that looks all the nicer in a display case.

Thanks. I purchased the case from Michael's. They commonly go on sale fro 50% off making the final cost $25. The mat came from my local hobby shop. It was originally intended for model trains. I have cut down some Build A Rama mats to fit inside of the cases, too.

Hi John,
Like Wellington, I guess, I also think that these rocket detachments were of no use other than make noise.....They did not help the 24th´s cause in their clash with the zulu´s either...{sm4}{sm4}{sm4}
But then that is a different story with a lot of incompetent top brass to blame...^&grin^&grin^&grin
But I am curious, to what was a rocket cane with a pennant used for !!!!
Cheers
