Napoleon et les Invalides Collections du musee de Armee (1 Viewer)

Did anyone go to the superb Napoleon exhibit in Memphis in '93? K&C's Napoleon in Egypt line prompted me to dig out the catalog from that show to look specifically at the items used by Napoleon during that campaign. A few years later, and I was at the Invalides & the Musee, looking at many of the same items that I'd seen in Memphis. I'd recommend a trip to Les Invalides to anyone who's a student of that time period; you won't regret it!

I went to see that show, it was terrific. A rare opportunity to see a great exhibit of Napoleonic artifacts here on this side of the Atlantic.

Just curious to know if you bought the video that went along with the exhibit. One of the more interesting aspects of the exhibit was that a number of the items were restored to help make that show even better than it was. Anyone who views those items today can thank the Memphis show's sponsors.

I picked up the catalog but did not get the video. The show curators truely put together a great show, which included some very rare and historic pieces. The Carabinier breastplate shot through by a cannon ball from the Battle of Waterloo is one of the pieces I'll never forget.

You're right. That one item spoke volumes. What was great about that show was that the items came from so many public & private collections. Imagine trying to track them all down separately. If you haven't gone to the Invalides & the Musee yet, promise yourself that you will do that. When my wife & I were there (the exhibits were all fantastic, of course), I got the greatest charge out of seeing a cluster of elementary school kids being guided around by their teacher. I especially wanted to hear how a French school teacher presented Waterloo to the kids & was most surprised at her lack of bias.

Well, I could not find that book in Paris:( So I guess will need to order it online...

Now I found this on YouTube which provides a peak preview on this cool museum...

Hello Grognard ,
First I would like to thank you for the links I thoroughly enjoyed them . After having now over a month to explore LES TRÉSORS DE L’EMPÉRI L’armée de Napoléon La collection Raoul et Jean Brunon I have read it cover to cover twice and enjoyed the pictures hundreds of times my opinion of this book is even higher now then when I first received it . I must get to see these items in person , i have looked at their website several times and noticed that you can make a donation to help maintain the collection and your donation is also good for a one year membership which includes free entrance to the museum , great if your planing on a visit . Again thanks for the links . Regards Gebhard

This museum is on my list of palces to visit when next I get back to France. Its in Provence, about an hour north of Marselles, so it would be great to vsit that aprt of the country, but I'd go in July, and see Le Tour flash past too.

Love seeing all those original uniforms right up close, just like in Les Inavides, and you can never get too much of a good thing :)

Thanks for the video, looks wonderful,

John

Taking French people to lunch or dinner always works :) Enjoy the visit and "La cuisine provençale" !

Thanks Gebhard! I found the following online bookseller in the US who carries this book ($165): http://onmilitarymatters.com/pages/search.php?term=keywords&data=emperi&submit=Search

Not cheap but keep in mind that the exchange rate is $1.40 for 1 Euro :(

Hi Grognard ,

Thanks Gebhard for the tip. Now I am confused by the description of the book condition. One part of the description says it's brand new (in English), another part says (in French) that this is a used book with some damage on the cover page...I will contact them since I don't want a second hand book...

Well, I am back in the U.S.! I went to the museum, and it is beyond words....... I am really beyond words:eek::eek::eek::eek:. Check out my new thread for pictures later in the week/tomorrow. I also purchased the book it question for $100, and it is in fact in ENGLISH AND FRENCH. It is also incredibly good. A must have!

Sandor,

did you see all of the exhibits?

I didn't have time, as I spent about 4 hours just vsiting the newly opened Napoleonic Galleries in July last year.

Next ime, and there will be another or 2 times, I hope to also see the WW1 & 2, but they are lower priority over NAPS.

Looking forward to seeing your images :salute::

Yes "Les Invalides" is a very cool museum for any Napoleonic era (and other military eras) fan. I visited it a few years ago but had only a couple hours to do so (too much to do and see in Paris :)). Did you have time to see Napoleon's sarcophagus and his son's (L'aiglon) tomb? The church with all the flags is very cool too. Looking forward to seeing your pictures as well!

I was so darn tired, as I walked to everywhere, so I spent one hour just sitting in the church of the soldier, while listening to the organ player (soooooooo lucky!). I spent a similar amount of time in the tomb, and it should also be noted that Vauban's tomb is there also! He is also my hero, and that was very cool. As much as I hate Hitler, it was him who brought back Napoleon's sons ashes. But I still hate him with very ounce of my sole. There was also a (new?) exhibit about the French resistance! I have a picture of me with the original Jean Moulin jacket, scarf, and hat! In my humble opinion, they have organised the tomb very badly, as it should be a quiet place of observance, rather than a giant tourist hub. It made me so mad that these people only wanted there picture, and then just made a lot of noise, etc....

Interesting note-Les Invalides got something wrong! They said the anthem of the first empire was Veillons Au Salut De L' Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8seLEKOr8aM) not le chant du Départ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GoGcSxl0xo) Unless I am mistaken, it is the later.

From many French sites including miltary ones, "Les Invalides" are correct but I also found other sites saying that "Le Chant du Départ" is the one. So not sure who is right...

Thanks for the info.! I really want to get to the bottom of this, as this is very important to me, so I will start a thread....

No... wait.... I have found the true answer:
It is 'Velons Salut' not 'Départ'. Check out the following article:
http://www.napoleon.org/en/magazine/napoleonic_delights/music/files/470171.asp?onglet=0
It says, "Le Chant du Départ, in other words Song of the Departure of the Troops (which Napoleon preferred to the Marseillaise), became almost the national anthem of the First Empire. It was however first and foremost a song of the Revolution."
This was the article sited by Wikipedia in the claim that it WAS the anthem. So now we know why it was thought to be the other way.
