We all know Napoléon I and Napoléon III, but officially was there a Napoléon II?

You are right that Napoléon II was the son of Napoléon. The tricky part of the question is whether he reigned and when. After the first abdication, yes Napoléon abdicated in favor of his son but the coalition rulers refused to recognize him as his successor and therefore he never got officially proclaimed Emperor (he was 3 year old btw), instead as we know a Bourbon king (Louis XVIII) became the official ruler of France. Then for the second abdication, Napoléon again abdicated in favor of his son. This time a commission of five officials (led by Fouché) took over power by interim awaiting the return of Louis XVIII. During the 2 weeks they held power they never summoned Napoléon II nor was a regent appointed. So technically Napoléon II ruled during that 2 weeks within knowing it since he was 4 year old and with his mother in Austria. This is why Napoléon III was not Napoléon II...
