Napoleonland (1 Viewer)

I think it is too specialized to be honest. I wonder when all said and done how many would actually go there.

I have to laugh as in the movie The Emperor's New Clothes, Napoleon, (Ian Holm) sneaks back into Europe around 1820 from St. Helena and stops at Waterloo Battlefield. It's a tourist destination in the film and he shops at the gift shop for Napoleon "kitsch."

Jeepers! I would go. My daughter is learning French and could escourt her poor old dad around.

I'll pass on that one. Years ago, the Disney people wanted to build something they were going to call "Historyland" next to a Civil War battlefield in northern Virginia. Their rationale was that no one would want to visit a "boring" battlefield when a theme park would be more "exciting." Among the park's attractions, there was going to be a section called "Slaveland."{eek3} Mercifully, the idea was shot down with the help of various organizations. To me, History is real enough & exciting enough without theme parks.

Slaveland??!! Not exactly. I remember the stink back when we used to go down that way for reenactments in the 90s. The US exhibit at Epcot is embarrassing enough. BUT Liberty Tree Tavern was a really good time at Disney World.

The French don't have an monopoly on wierd, crazy and stupid theme parks, we have one here in Australia it's called CANBEERA.

We have the Creation Museum in Kentucky.
Caveman riding dinosaurs!!!!

Not sure about that one. I have seen very good historical reenactments in France (mostly middle age ones in castles) but I don’t think you can do a good job recreating the scale of a Napoleonic battle every day especially where it didn’t take place.

Cannot imagine the French presenting Waterloo or Trafalgar. It will never happen. Trooper

Don't get me started on the Creation Museum. Here's noted biology professor PZ Myers posing ironically on the mechanical dinosaur ride at the Creation Museum. Myers brought his students to the museum as kind of "Scared Smart" program.

Now folks associated with the Creation Museum are planning to build a Noah's Ark theme park in Kentucky. A Noah's Ark as historical fact theme park. As this subject is close to modern politics, I'll let you nice folks look THAT up your own.

Right! A certain boredom sets in even among hobbyist reenactors causing us to want to get it over and get to the beer.

Well, Texans do The Alamo, Russians do Alma and Borodino as reenactments. Southerners do show up for Gettysburg. You have a point in that Waterloo/Trafalgar were final defeats as opposed one defeat with later victories. We do Lexington so that the Good Guys can win later at Concord, or Bunker Hill for a later Yorktown. Southerners get an honorable end at an Appomattox.

Heck, they should built here in Gloucester! We actually have a harbor they could float it in.

The Staff at these places are important. We went to the Virginia Busch Garden "Old Country" back in the 90s and it was a little sad as they didn't pay or indoctrinate the staff to look like they were happy or having fun the way the Disney staff does.
