Napoleon's Polish Allies (1 Viewer)

OK I'm going to float another idea for Borodino. The Poles! They were probably Napoleon's strongest ally, pinning their hope for independence on Napoleon's victory. Polish lancers and infantry would be a great subject.

I see that no one has mentioned the Polish Infantry made by Alexanders Toy Soldiers, who has Polish Voltigeur and Vistula Infantry as well as other countries such as Bavaria, Prussia, Saxony.

In Nik's cavalry sections he has Prussian, Russian and Austrian as well as the 'common' ones from France and Britain. They are available as either kits, and painted in matt or gloss, so check it all out here http://www.ats-uk.net/

John thanks for the information I just spent some time looking over the web site . I'm very impressed with the depth of coverage of the Napoleonic wars and some very wonderful choices of subject both combat and non combat .I love the Prussian Infantryman with wife and child very creative( I'm going to purchase one ). I must say its all a matter of personal taste, I know I'm in the minority but I just prefer my toy soldiers not to look so much like toys ( sounds stupid I know ) Its just my personal taste :)( hope I don't offend anyone ) Really a Great line of Figures . Thanks again and like I said I'm really learning allot on this Forum. All the best Gebhard

Yes, I agree about you wanting to have figures looking not like toys, but more realistic, and thats why makers such as First Legion have grasped a whle lot of the market. Also the 60mm figure doesn't fit in with ATS 54mm very well.

What I've done with ATS is paint them in a more realistic matt finsih that goes half way into fitting in with other makers.

For example these British Infantry from the Retreat to Coruuna.

Those figures are really well done. It is really hard to beat FL's quality, but until FL fleshes out their subjects of Borodino and Waterloo, you can always look to other companies for an obscure subject. Your repaints are great.
I can hardly wait for Matt to start covering the Peninsula though;):D

John , Your repaints look Fantastic ! What I think is you should be a subcontractor for ATS ;) seriously your work is that good ." First Legion Napoleon's Europe is raising the bar on Napoleonic toy soldiers. You can collect Toys or you can collect History the choice is yours " That is taken from their latest add in Toy Soldier Collector magazine. ATS sculpts even with your Great repaint still look a little to much like toys for my taste . I must say its all a matter of personal taste, I know I'm in the minority but I just prefer my toy soldiers not to look so much like toys ( sounds stupid I know ) Its just my personal taste ( hope I don't offend anyone ) Thanks again all the best and happy collecting Gebhard:)

Hi Gebhard,
Can I just make a correction to what has been posted re ATS and their line of napoleonic figures. I don't think for one minute that John was suggesting that ATS figures should be repainted. More that if you want your figures to be that little more realistic then rather than gloss you should either order them direct with a matte finish or if you feel sufficiently confident then why not buy them as castings and give them the matte finish treatment yourself. It is just that the last couple of comments on John's execellent Retreat to Corunna figures seems to suggest that John has done a repaint job on them and this is most definitely not the case. As I understand it, he bought them as castings and then painted them with a matte finish. Just thought that I would clear this up in case their was any misunderstanding.

Martin

I think you are a great painter and you accomplished the stated goal.;):D I do like the sculpting on those ATS figures and just wish they we a little bigger to fit in with the Britains / First Legion sizing.:(

Hi Martin,
Thanks for clearing that up... Johns comment of "What I've done with ATS is paint them in a more realistic matt finsih that goes half way into fitting in with other makers." I guess kinda threw me off a bit .When saying I've painted them ...I guess I just assumed he meant repainted . I most certainly apologize for the misunderstanding. I think he did a Fantastic Job.;) . I on the other hand cannot paint so good thats why I like to purchase Figures that are painted to a much higher level then I myself can obtain. Thanks again for the clarification. As for scale I have items in my collection from just about every size to include some German flats to me its just about the quality of the sculpt and painting the more realistic the better they look to me. . All the best and Happy collecting Gebhard

Gebhard,

yes, there was a misunderstanding, when you though I'd repainted the ATS figures, but I only paint castings.

The main reason is that I enjoy painting, and thats the main thing that got be back into toy soldiers. Collecting is the necessary bi-product to my labours :)

Another reason I painted myself was that the makers 12 years ago were not up to my standatrd, and i was blowed if I'd pay good money for an inferior finish, when I could buy castings and do it myself.

Besides thats also helps the budget, so more troops for the buck :)

You will also see in the new 'Repairs' section of the forum, some more of my handiwork, doing repairs to painted figures, so you see I also collect painted figures, but only from the few high standard makers.

regards,

John
