A Nazi unmanned weatherstation active until 1981?

It was identified in 1981 for what it was but had probably been seen before that but left alone. I doubt it was in operation in 1981, after all, how long would WW2 batteries last in the Arctic even with minimal power draw but no ability to recharge?
