Watched the program on tv & thought it was worth getting on dvd
rguably one of the most important documentary series ever made, 1997's The Nazis: A Warning from History sets out to show that, far from being a uniquely German aberration, Nazism fed upon and was fostered by the prejudices and lemming-like inclinations of ordinary people. Although culminating with the atrocities of the Holocaust, these programmes are equally good on the motives of otherwise perfectly normal people, who needed only the tacit encouragement of the regime to perpetrate horrors against their enemies, their neighbours, or their own family. When confronted with evidence of their Nazi past, elderly former party members are often unable to find any other justification for their actions than simply that they could get away with it. Far from being a monolithic dictatorship which compelled the citizenry to act in rigidly prescribed ways, the Nazi state just allowed people to give their worst inclinations free reign.

Hitler, it turns out, was a profoundly lazy man who rarely got out of bed before midday, and preferred to leave affairs of state to sort themselves out. He subscribed fervently to the doctrine of survival of the fittest as applied to all social and political matters, and actively encouraged in-fighting among his subordinates. The result was an organisational vacuum at the centre of state, which super-ambitious acolytes were only too eager to fill, often acting on nothing more than the Fuhrer's off-the-cuff remarks. One small example is revealing: after reading a letter from the father of a disabled child, Hitler agreed that it would be best for the boy to die. From this single statement arose a nationwide policy of euthanasia for all disabled children, carried out willingly and without compulsion by the doctors and "carers" themselves. It needed nothing more than the Fuhrer's nod. The message is clear and shocking: it happened in Germany, it could happen anywhere.

Was a very interesting documentary. Many show the manner in which the third reich was ran (or not) another example would be the autonomy of the Gauleiters and Hitlers veiws on how they should be ran

Much eveidence has shown the almost chaotic way it was ran but, as typical with germans they can even run chaos well. Its interesting as you state how germany seemed to fumble along from the 30's at a localised level murdering under medical terminology and other such anacronisms until we get full blown genocide.

Many questions remain unanswered and, its one of the reasons why after the war at trials like Nuremburg etc I would in a historical sense, have liked to have seen the defendants given ''life'' sentences rather than execution.

This would have allowed the oppotunity to question them in greater detail over a period of years rather than some of the explanations given under the threat of hanging.

What is clear is that on many occasions since the warning has been ignored

I remember reading Speer's inside the Third Reich and getting the chaos feeling from the writer who was part of it all.

Nazis are still the "Gold Standard" of evil to which modern people compare their enemies to. But there is also Godwin's Law in which one who uses the first use of the Nazi reference loses the argument. Recently the Pope in a speech in the UK blamed atheism for the Third Reich.

I think the so called law is often abused and used innapropriately. Speer's book was fascinating but, given his performance at Nuremburg one always has to read between the lines as I wonder how much of the actual dislike about the regime with him was actually true or just enough to save him from the rope and too fit into polite society which, he indeed did very well after release from jail.

Gustav Le Bon: The Crowd

Read it and you will understand the social control they exercised.

There are certain networks and people running for elections are using these very same principles right now and are fairly successful.

Never underestimate the crowd and mob mentality and what it can do to otherwise "civilized" people.

We are NEVER that far from something like that.

Gideon...

Quite true

Very much agee. It links to my thread on lynchings in the USA. If you need any prove of what the mob can do, seach the lynching of Henry smith. Quite chilling.

Ian Kershaw had an interesting theory called "working toward the Fuhrer" in which many policies of the Nazis were driven from the bottom up without any direct orders from Hitler based upon the desire of various officials to gain power. In other words, Hitler established a broad policy and his underlings took it upon themselves to implement as they saw fit. It's something of an interesting theory when applied to Hitler's role in the Holocaust. For example, how much did Hitler know and what was his direct role in the Holocaust are questions that are oddly not well documented. The Germans tended to keep meticulous records even on events such as the Holocaust not viewing their actions as a crime they would be held responsible for.

Under Kershaw's theory, as I understand it, Hitler would have had little direct involvement in the development of the system of extermination that resulted in the Holocaust but would have retained primary responsibility for events by establishing the underlying policies. The absence of any written order or document linking Hitler to the holocaust is something of an historical oddity though. Hitler's intent and anti-Semitic beliefs were long standing and included in nearly every major speech from 20's until the end. So it was no great secret to be kept from the public. In fact it was something of a point of pride for him when all was said and done in 1945 as Hitler pointed to his dealings with the Jews as his major accomplishment in his last will and testament.

Rob, yes saw that thread and I posted but I think my post was deleted.

Le Bons book really helped pave the way for the propaganda techniques in Germany, and other places.
