Thanks to a remarkable 2-1 victory in last night's Los Angeles regional, UMd has made it through to the super-regionals. They defeated top-seed UCLA in 2 out of 3 games to move on. UCLA was not only the #1 seed in the LA regional, they were the #1 seed in the whole tournament. UMd went in as a #3 in the LA regional and was one of the last teams into the field of 64 teams. It is quite a feat to knock off #1, taking 2 of 3 on their home field. UMd now returns to the east coast to play Virginia in the round of 16. The round against UVa is also a best 2 of 3, between June 5-7 at Charlottesville, with the winner moving to the College WS playoffs.
This has been a remarkable sports year for UMd in it's first year in the Big 10. Their basketball team, football team, baseball team, and lacrosse team have all been wildly successful, contending for the Big 10 titles and national titles, as have the women's lacrosse and basketball teams. Go Terps! -- Al

Indeed Al, I think the Terps took a few Big Ten teams and fans by surprise. It has been a good yr. Chris

Terps blew the first game against UVa. Had a 3-0 lead going into the 8th. The UMd starter gave up 2 hits and was relieved with 2 on, no out. The closer then proceeded to fall apart, giving up 4 hits, including a bases clearing double with 2 out. UVa scored 5 times in the 8th and won the game 5-3. Too bad, UMd had a won game with 6 outs to go. And that is why they you have to get 27 outs. Perhaps they'll do better today. -- Al

Classic choke job by UMd today. Entered the bottom the 9th with a 4-2 lead. UVa loaded the bases with no out and UMd brings in the same closer that blew yesterday's game and he proceeded to walk in 1 run to go 4-3 and then gave up a hit, UVa scores 2 and wins 5-4. I hope the closer has a career other than baseball in mind. UMd eliminated in the super-regionals for the second year in a row by UVa. UMd had both games won but couldn't close the deal. Too bad. -- Al

I think it must be my fault Al. :redface2: Was watching the game and left after UM was up 4-2 after 8th inning to go out to dinner. Son told me they lost at restaurant. Shouldn't have left before end of the game and changed the mojo. Chris

Chris, I'm actually sure it was my fault. I allowed myself to believe that they were actually going to win both games with those late leads. I should have known better after all the years as a Terp fan. :rolleyes2: -- Al
