Need help: Paint is flaking off (1 Viewer)

Tom,
Thank you for your pictures, they are worth a thousand words. As you can see it is not an isolated incident and at the cost of these precious figures it is inexcusable to have these problems. Obvious lack of QC by manufacturers (China/Hong Kong). It would be nice if companies would own it and replace problem figures with brand new corrected figures. That is how I feel when I find them in my collection.

Actually Howard, I beg to differ, these are ‘isolated incidents’.

Consider this simple fact...Over the years K&C alone has produced literally hundreds of thousands of figures, probably millions. The number of ‘paint-flaking’ incidents is, I believe, relatively rare considering the huge numbers involved, thank goodness.
Annoying most certainly... but rare never the less.

Many other collectors, right here on this thread, have provided ample evidence of other factors, such as ‘environmental’ which can also have an adverse effect on figures. Many of the examples I have seen personally have been the result of some kind of ‘chemical reaction’ caused by the conditions figures in which figures have been stored in...or even displayed in...or have been handled.

Of course, human error and/or carelessness either at the factory...or at any other single point all the way down the supply and collector chain can also cause problems and that is deeply regrettable.

When, and if, I believe K&C is responsible, then we do our best to help or replace such damages.

However to state that ‘obvious lack of QC by manufacturers in China/Hong Kong’ is both wrong and ignores the evidence of actual numbers and the evidence and experience of other collectors.

Best wishes,
Andy.

Andy,
Thank you for your reply and we have met several times before at the Texas Toy Soldier Show. I am the Fat Guy in a Wheelchair if you remember. I will agree with you that there is no wholesale failure of these painted figures but it is and industry wide problem. Each figure that I buy from any manufacturer is a individual work of art. The amount of detail on the figures today is absolutely amazing and that is why I collect them. I have painted many bare metal war game figures to a fairly detailed standard and for over 50 years have never had even one figure's paint flake off after properly primed. That is why I believe the primer is the problem.

I have had K&C, Britain, Figarti, and Black Hawk figures with paint flaking. Even though it has been a small portion, when even one of these works of art fail it is very disappointing. Like other collectors have said only a few people are able to paint at a level good enough to restore them. Andy all I am saying is anything you can do to minimize this issue as close to zero as possible would be appreciated. Thank you again for being responsive.

Absolutely positive, Brad. Certainly not what you'd expect to see in the way of primer, as paint isn't gonna adhere well to so smooth a surface. IIRC, it had a bit of a cream tint to it. Back then, I suspected that someone had used the wrong material for the primer coat. Prior to touch-up, I found that paint was coming off in patches where I touched the figure. Will post a pic below that indicates several of the areas where I applied the MM enamel. How/why the paint on the figs subsequently stabilized, I have no clue.

Went looking for the tread that alerted me to the issue with these same two figures:

So, this happens occasionally.

It's worth noting, as I did in my brief exposition, that the discussion in question took place SEVEN YEARS AGO.

Certainly no reason to blow things out of proportion or attribute failings to product that's consistently high in quality.

I agree, Moe. I disagreed with the generalization that "China has poor quality control". Not because I disagree with generalizations-a generalization is a useful way of looking at a subject. But it has to be generally true, by which I mean it must occur most of the time. And since the generalization was made in a discussion of a K&C product, I thought that it was not an accurate description of K&C's practices. Subsequent posts seem to support my opinion-that K&C's QC is better than that statement.

Prost!

Moe , My problem with flaking off paint happened with the LAH Berlin 38 series, especially with the red colour. I see in the pictures you posted you just overpaint the flaked area . I Always use a filler first ( plastic putty / Vallejo), so that once painted the area where the paint came off is no longer visible .

Over the last 13 years that I have been collecting K&C figures, I have had only one set with paint flaking issues
(warm boots cold feet) Having over 1,000 figures pass in and out of my hands / collection over the years
that is a pretty good ratio IMO....Less than 1/10th of 1%

Same here Wayne. I started collecting in 2006 and over the years in my dioramas I handled several hundreds of figures and I have another several hundreds of figures in in my own collection and only had 2 figures with a minor problem that was easily solved.

Andy from KC should be informed and take appropriate response with his manufacturers make sure this does not continue
