Good Day.
I need some information. We had a fine gentleman that painted up some amazing figures in gloss plus added extras items on the figures. I remember he would add wings onto military band figures with aluminum foil. He always did amazing work. I’m looking for information on how he based some of his figures.

Hi David,

I think you may be talking about the late forum member Johnnybach, who did make quite a few bands and made many modifications to his figures. He passed away around 2019 and although his posts can still be found the images seem to have been swallowed up by photobucket and are no longer viewable.

Forum member Obee has also completed a few bands in gloss. His website is always worth a visit and he is very helpful.

Yeah, I had the same thought, johnnybach. For his bases, he used metal stock that he cut to size and shape. David, you could look through his threads, because I asked him that very question in one of them. I had been using a piece of copper roof flashing for bases, and I was curious about the ones he used.

Thank you so much. I remember I had awesome chats with him but I couldn’t for the life of me remember his name. I’m try to base a mounted band and if my right he used a type of washer but I can’t remember how he completed it.

I starting using steel bases made for wargamers, for my single figures. They are an inch square, which is about the size of the one-off bases I used to cut from copper roof flashing. I got them from War Game Accessories in Florida. Their website is www.wargameaccessories.com. I think they came in bags of 25 bases. Since I pin my figures to the bases, I had to get some fine drill bits for drilling steel, but only takes a couple of minutes to drill the holes. They take the same primer and colors I use with my toy soldiers. I'm very happy with this product.

thats exactly what I do to mount horses. I use tinplate and then cut it to the required size.

The base can also be textured if requires by applying glue then a dusting of sane before painting.

Yes, I also cut a piece of metal sheet for horses, if there's no kit base. I got some Stadden horse castings that needed bases, for example. Many kit horses that I get, like Imrie-Risley, come with a nice white metal base, and I use those.
