I have been wanting FINNISH Inf. & SKI TROOPS for YEARS!!!
I just saw them and I'm a little disappointed.
I’ll buy them, but is to blame for the incompetence?!
6 of the 14 poses are just standing there doing nothing!
NOT ONE, NO FINNISH SKI TROOPS??!!!
Is it the fault of a sculpture? Or is it just the LACK of imagination of the product director??
Bad decisions are hurting our hobby!
"HEY" Engineer Bassevitch, if you ever need some professional line drawings of poses for future sets, contact me.
I’ll do them for free!
I was super excited yesterday, now I’m just, "whatever, I'll buy them"

Ok guys... You look disappointed and I find you a little bit harsh, but I think Engineer Bassevitch (Yes, it's the brand of this Russian toy soldiers maker, you would have been able to mention it in the title), in my opinion, do not care of the US market. He makes Russian History... for Russian (and maybe Finland for these set). Who made ski troops except Atlantic with one of his Alpini and Airfix with his German mountain troops (with removeable feet)^&confuse:confused: and who ever made Finish soldiers in 1/32 (no one). This brand is very prolific (3 or 4 sets a year), any advance?
Some more pictures a Russian friend of mine sent me:

Don't get us wrong, I LOVE the Russian Front subjects.
YES, everyone was very vocal and critical on all of the forums about this set, only because we all had such high hopes for the FINNS.
Its still decent, but we all wanted FINNISH SKI TROOPS in action poses.

Honesty is the only way for the makers to know how we feel.

The figures from this company on the whole seem over priced for what they are. I like the character figures in the sets but personally will not buy these due to their price. I personally see no need for troops on skis. If your so inclined to have ski troops let alone Finnish ones its very easy to convert some airfix gerbirgsjager (sp?) into Finnish ski troops.

I should correct myself.
Most of us, wanted FINNISH WINTER & SKI TROOPS.

Question? What is that "cylinder" thing that the one figure is carrying?

"We all wanted FINNISH SKI TROOPS" ????? Just who is "we". I am not aware of any poll that took place to discuss this subject but would be delighted to read it, if you can point me in the right direction.
How many people were polled - 1,000's?
How current is the info?
Was it done on-line (not accurate as so many still don't use a computer)?
Was it issued out to all of the media magazines?
Were all the mail-order companies asked to supply a questionnaire when mailing out?
If so, how was I missed?

Might I ask as to what other Companies you are comparing the price of these to, in order to quantify your statement that these seem to be over priced?
You have to compare like to like, so they would have to be compared with another Company who is only making 1,000 sets (or in this particular case, just 300 sets!) against the mass-production of, say, TSSD, Paragon, Barzso (plastic sets only) etc who would normally have to produce 6,000 shots and who reduce the number down to 3,000 sets by simply placing 2 shots of each figure in a pack.

I can't think of another Company, apart from possibly PVBLIS who may have comparable production numbers - also from Russia, and who sell at a similar price.

China for the most part won't do low production without incurring a cost penalty, generally, they would not switch on their machines for these small amounts.
Also remember that these are not readily available from every dealer. Only a very few have them.
They are made by a 'cottage industry' in a Country that is becoming harder and harder to be able to do business with because of their political situation.

WHO?
Myself and all my friends who I speak too about the hobby.
"WE" are the devoted collectors buying YOUR product!
We sure the hell didn't want an important set (subject) to be a thrown together with odds & ends.
You gave us a mixed bag of Finn Inf, Winter Fins, 6 figures standing around doing nothing and Soviet Soldiers in the mix.
Even 7 action poses of Winter Fins & 7 poses of summer Finns would have been a healthy offering.
I'm going to buy them, but it could have been a great set, covering the Finns winter defence of Finland.
I am very passionate about your WWII figures, we just wish they would put a little more thought and care into their releases.

Plastic General

Can you guarantee that the Finns would sell in the THOUSANDS? That's the scale necessary to tool up for plastic production. Although I am a big WW2 buff, I have absolutely zero interest in the Finnish figures. There are enough like that the desirability for Finnish figures might be a tad over estimated.

I do agree with you that the poses of the Finns seem uninspired. They really don't call out "Winter War 1940" to my eyes.

Gary B.

NO, I cannot guarantee thousands of sales for FINNS.
BUT I can guarantee, if they make a ****ty set, nobody will buy it, not even the collectors who normally would!
It takes the same amount of money and energy to make a good set, as it does to make a ****ty set.

SUBJECT + SCULPTING + POSES + ACCURACY makes a GOOD TOY SOLDIER SET = HAPPY COLLECTORS = GOOD BUSINESS.

Plastic General

So now I am Russian and am the person behind Engineer Basevich????

"I" gave you a mixed bag of the figures you describe?

"I" gave you diddly-squat! If you cannot get the basic facts straight, your comments have no meaning.

You talk absolute garbage! You DON'T buy my product as I am NOT the manufacturer of this set!

I simply posed the question which you have failed to answer in any depth, and have gone off into yet another one of your rants!
Your friends and all you speak to about the hobby? and just what percentage of the Toy Soldier Collector market is that exactly?
A handful of armchair generals does not amount to anything like an official opinion gathering.

It sounds more to me like you, yourself, have decided what figures we as buyers want. Personally, I don't want Officers, Bandsmen, Pilots and figures that are saluting but am happy to have sentries, troops relaxing, etc. However, I am happy that these are the kind of figures that others do actually want. Going by my sales of these sets, everyone else agrees that.

I,ve spoken several times to Plastic General, for lack of a better term, he is an army of one. He speaks for no one but himself.
There is an old saying that would apply to the General, "Put your money where your mouth is". It,s awfully easy to sit back and critsize if you don,t have a single penny invested.
Gary

Well "GARY" as for ME, producing toy soldier sets?
I DID PUT MY MONEY WHERE MY MOUTH WAS.
I came very close to producing our first two sets in 2004 with Ed Brenard, the owner of Brenard Mold in Windsor Ont.
His tool and die plant was the same one that created all of the big CONTE sets for the first years.
Ed was going to be my PARTNER. Unfortunately because of the trends with China, the factory was sold and my project had to be cancelled.
BAD LUCK. But we came VERY CLOSE.

As for my opinions about figure sets: "Engineer Bassevitch"
I LOVE TOY SOLDIERS, from ALL PERIODS!
I spend a lot of money on TOY SOLDIERS & VEHICLES.
Nowadays I strictly collect WWII, but ALL THEATRES of WWII obsessively.
When I hear about a new WWII set that is about to be released, I count the days till I finally get to see and own them!
As a devoted and passionate collector, YES, I do have a critical eye!
As high paying collectors, should we NOT have an opinion of the products being offered to us?
Or should we just shut up and buy them?
Our hobby is not doing so well that it doesn't need critical thinking about its products.
I want "Engineer Bassevitch" to create fantastic sets, at reasonable prices so I happily to spend tonnes of money on their new releases!

Christian, on the same token, I played hockey, and almost made the NHL, oh wait a minute I was not good enough. Get the picture?
Gary

Yes Gary, I really did go for it, at least I did that.
The point of a forum like this, is to discuss, debate and praise the hobby.
According to you, unless someone has manufactured a set themselves, their opinion has no value?
Then I guess Gary, all of YOUR opinions do not matter also.
At least I have every intention of buying one or two of these Finnish sets and if you don't, your opinion on the subject matters even less.

If I remember correctly you won,t be able to purchase this set unless a door to door salesman sells it to you. No paypal, no credit cards, good luck!
Gary
