He joined the Hitlerjugend in 1932 and joined the SS in 1933.
In 1936 he was posted as an Untersturmführer to the Leibstandarte as a platoon leader.Participated as a platoon commander in the invasion of the Netherlands and France. Was the adjutant of Sepp Dietrich during the invasion of the Balkan and Russia; Here he became commander of the LSSAH Sturmgeschutz battalion. In 1942 he received command of the 1st batt 1 SS Panzer Regiment LSSAH. With this battalion he saved the encircled 1st SS Recon Battalion commanded by Kurt Meyer. Together they formed a Kampfgruppe and defeated the Russian VI Guards Cavalry Corps. For this he was awarded the German Cross in gold and the Knight's cross.
In 1943 he was ordered to the 12th SS Panzer Div. Hitlerjugend and took command of the 1st Panzer Rgeiment.His regiment was credited with the destruction of 219 allied tanks during the Battle of Normandy . For this he was awarded oak leaves to his Knight's Cross. In august he was captured in the Falaise pocket . He spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp in Scotland
