Hi Benjamin, it's a protective leather cover. Its basically a shako cover as you see on lots of naps but the difference is the soldier is wearing a bearskin underneath. It is not something you see very often in nap ts wearing a bearskin but when on campaign the soldiers would cover their hats to help waterproof them and protect them from the elements.Pardon a simple question but why is there a blanket wrapped around the hat? I do not collect Naps, but this is an excellent sculpt.
