New Collector with some Durbar questions (1 Viewer)

Gentle Friends,

Several references have been made to a thread I initiated months ago (December, 2012.) The thread is titled, "The View from My Chair" and it included some hurriedly taken photos of my display room. Among other things, the photos present some of my Delhi Durbar collection. If anyone wishes to re-visit my thread, simply click the link below:

My collection has grown considerably since the thread was originally posted. And,...I have recently purchased a new camera. Consequently, sometime in the future, I will be able to add some better photos of my collection. Unfortunately, my display room is undergoing some renovation and I am in the process of packing my collection. Once all the work is completed and my collection is back in place, I will supply some better and more detailed photos of the items I own.

In order to provide you with a sample of my newest Durbar items, I have attached some photos of one of my most recent Beau Geste purchases. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Hello friends,

Sorry for the hiatus from the thread. I started a new job last year and it has been taking up way too much of my time.

All of the responses from everybody have been great, especially the jealousy inducing photos of your impressive collections (Dave, Pat and Damian I am looking at you!:salute::). Getting my bearings on the different manufacturers took some time but I have finally begun to pick up a few of the W.Britains old glossy sets. I am currently waiting on the delivery of my first elephant: Set 08956 The Duke and Duchess of Connaught.

And prior to that I picked up what I thought were too very reasonably priced sets: Set 00132 Mace Bearers, and Set 00082 27th Light Madras Cavalry.

Not much so far, but i look forward to improving my collection. Also as soon as the elephant arrives I will break out the camera and post some pics.

Regards,
Tim

PS. Have any of you ever participated in an auction through Old Toy Soldier Auctions? A catalog for an old auction of theirs, which had a large number of durbar sets and the prices they sold for, came up in my search. It seemed interesting but I would like to hear what some more experienced hands might think.

Just in case you decide to go Matte.^&grin, Robin.

Hi Tim,

Congratulations on your new acquisitions! You have made an excellent beginning to what I am certain will soon become an endless and exciting adventure. Once the Durbar bug bites, you become hopelessly addicted to its charm. As you are able, please keep us informed regarding the development of your collection. Also, if you have questions regarding the Durbar, please post them on the forum. There are folks here who have plenty of expertise.

Again, congratulations for some fine purchases! And, welcome to the wonderful world of Durbar Collectors!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Hi Robin,

That is a very nice presentation of matte Durbar and Indian figures. I also like the use of the Britains Pavilion in the scene. I think I recognize all the figures in the photo except the photographer figure. Could you share the manufacturer and the line to which the figure belongs?

It is always a pleasure to view Durbar displays and yours does not disappoint. Thank you so much for sharing your photos with us.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

Thank you kindly Pat. The photographer is K&C CW054 from their civil war series. I must say the Durbar series lends itself to Gloss due to its colourful theme and see why collectors love these. Robin.

Hi Guys,

Great looking matte display! I also have a few of these so I see some potential in acquiring a few more as time goes by.

To answer the question on the Old Toy Soldier Auctions, I have bid a few times there and been generally out bid but once in a while I nab a set. I also have found them at Philip Weiss Auction in NY where I have had very good luck in the past. Keep looking ebay and do get to the shows if you have a chance there are a lot of things to found there. I look forward to seeing some photos as you build up! Like Pat says once the Durbar bug bites its very difficult to resist them.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I am definitely looking forward to going to some shows this year. Do you guys have any favorites?

Tim

Hi Tim,

The largest show in the US, which is my favorite annual show, is the Chicago Show. It is frequently known as OTSN (Old Toy Soldier News) and it is not really held in Chicago. It is held in Schaumburg which is located in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. The show is presented each year in late September. The actual show date for 2014 is September 28. However, most of us arrive a few days early to engage in room trading. Let me explain.

Several days prior to the actual show, many dealers arrive and unpack and display their goods in their rooms. If the door to their room is open, it is an invitation to enter the room and shop. Two entire floors of the show hotel are almost totally composed of dealers. During the days, collectors haunt the hotel halls looking for their desired items and, hopefully, finding many of them. On Thursday and Friday, many of the rooms remain open until 9:00 or 10:00 pm. On Saturday, the rooms close early as dealers must pack their goods in preparation for moving them to the actual show area on Sunday morning.

The actual show is conducted on Sunday and it concludes around 3:00 pm.

One of the greatest things about arriving at the Chicago show a few days early is the opportunity to meet and interact with collector friends (new and old). If you can imagine three or four full days of nothing but toy soldiers and quality time spent with people who experience the same passion as you, then you will begin to get the feel of this most powerful of shows.

I realize travel and expense might be significant issues and, if these are concerns you experience, there are some excellent shows near you on the East Coast. Due to my own concerns regarding travel and expense, I have never attended a show in the East, so I will let those who are more familiar with those shows share their perceptions with you.

My recommendation is to attend whatever show(s) your resources permit as they all have merit. You will surely find some Treefroggers at any show you choose and you will enjoy the event thoroughly. However, bring some budget as one of the most frustrating things one can experience is seeing all those wonderful and beautiful figures and not being able to add any of them to your collection.

Good luck and keep us informed!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)
