Great to learn of these new releases. Now that Bachmans no longer act for Britains, I'm not quite sure how we in the UK can get hold of them.

Here is a photo of a diorama which incorporates the ACW Federal artillery limber set #31291 that Ken Osen posted on the WB facebook page on this past Thursday. The set comes with 2 crew members and is now in stock. There is also a Confederate limber w/2 figures version available and in stock.

Sets shown L-R: #31138 Ordnance Rifle, #31144 artillery Corporal, #31283 crew w/hand on belt, #31270 crew yelling, #31291 crew arms at side, #31291 Limber, #31189 crew arms crossed, #31291 crew with leather pouch

To make this into a full 8-man gun crew I would recommend getting #31072 crew in shirt sleeves with ramrod and #31084 crew with worm.

To really add to the above you could also use the artillery officer w/sword from command set 1 #31136, and command set 2 #31137 artillery sgt pointing and artillery Battery B guidon carrier

All of these sets together with some additional scenic pieces would make a very nice looking diorama with a full 8-man gun crew with support personnel . . . at least that's what I am planning to do :wink2: . . . photos to follow when my planned diorama is completed.

Some additional information concerning the manning of an ACW Federal artillery piece (from Wikipedia "Field Artillery in the Americna Civil War):

For the average artillery piece it took eight highly trained artillerymen to form a gun crew. Each member of the crew was cross-trained to do all the jobs required to operate a gun.[20] If a crew member was killed or wounded, another member of the crew could take his place.[20] Gun crews were among the best trained soldiers in either the Confederate or Union armies.[20] They were also vulnerable. They had to see their target to hit it. If they could see their target, the enemy soldiers they were targeting could see them.

For a gun crew to get off the maximum number of accurate rounds per minute, they used a system whereby each man had a number.[20] His number indicated his main task:

Number 1 - Sponges out the barrel to wet down any hot spots or sparks. He then rams the round (cannonball and powder or shell) down the barrel.[20]
Number 2 - Uses a "worm" (a large corkscrew on a pole) to make sure there is nothing caught in the barrel. He then loads the round and charge in the barrel ready for ramming.[20]
Number 3 - Covers the vent hole with his thumb wearing a special glove.[20] He then pierces the loaded powder bag with a spike.[20]
Number 4 - Places the friction primer in the vent hole just prepared by Number 3. On the command of "fire" he pulls the lanyard attached to the primer which fires the gun.[20]
Number 5 - Carries the round from the limber to the artillery piece.[20]
Number 6 - In charge of the ammunition box on the limber and prepares the friction primers.[20]
Number 7 - Hands the round each time to Number 5.[20]
Gunner - Aligns and aims the artillery piece.[20]
Each gun or artillery piece had a sergeant who commanded the gun.[20]
