I like where CS is going with this and its always good to see some Roman cavalry come along. Before I looked at this I was gonna find the CS Agincourt thread and ask what people thought of the CS mounted figures. I was debating on picking some of those up but wasn't sure about the horse. Something just seemed off from the stock photos. I was hoping someone that had 1 of them could post a pic or 2.
In 43 AD 3 Auxiliary cavalry units were included in the invasion of Britain The famous Batavian cavalry, Thracian cavalry and the Vettonian cavalry. Seeing that the Batavian Horse played the most crucial role I would assume thats who CS was shooting for. As far as these figures go I like the accuracy of the saddle (as long as the back has 2 horns), mail vest, breeches, a hint of gold coloring in the helmet and the oval shield (wish I could see the insignia on the oval shields other then the Decurions). The only concern I have is the sword which should not be a Gladius but rather a Spatha. The Spatha was essentially a long sword that gave the cavalry soldier a larger range since he was mounted. The Gladius just wasn't very fundamentally sound for cavalry units. The only other thing I see is the mounted figure holding the eagle standard. This would never be in the hands of a Auxillary cavalry unit (made up of Germans). They did not hold the status to carry such a standard into battle. The eagle was the responsibility of the 1st cohort.
