Good morning everyone, we would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a safe and terrific New Year. Both John and I would like to thank you for all your support this year. The great news is if you thought this years releases where good, next years will be even better.

Welcome to the December releases, scheduled to arrive in January 2014, written on mild and chilly day here in the San Francisco Bay area, still no rain and not a sign of it.

We start the year off with a bang, with terrific Club releases, WWI Tank and of course Woodland Indian, plus many more. 2014 is already looking good.

Hope you enjoy the new releases as much as I do.

Happy Christmas

The 55th Foot Regiment, was Lord Howe’s regiment, and these soldiers displayed the field modifications introduced by that energetic and gifted commander. The main goals of which were to improve functionality in the American wilderness.
Hats were cropped, and coats were docked short with the lace removed, so as not to encumber the men in the thick forest. The hair was also cropped short for ease and comfort, a measure Lord Howe was also to follow. Hatchets were carried instead of swords, and an extra cartridge box at the waist brought the total ammunition carried by each man up to 36 rounds. Each man would also carry in his knapsack a large supply of meal, which he was expected to cook for himself.

There were never more than 30 engineers at any time serving with Wellington’s army in the Peninsular. They were all officers and came under the board of Ordnance. Their main function was to organize and oversee the sieges. The Duke was to write in a letter to Lord Liverpool after the costly siege and assault of Badajoz “…our engineers, though well-educated and brave, have never turned their minds to the mode of conducting a regular siege, as it is useless to think of that which it is impossible in our service, to perform.”
The main problem stemmed from a lack of proper grounding in siege operations and having only unwilling and unskilled working parties of infantry to work with. It was this lack of trained subordinates which hindered their work.
When released from the pressure associated with a siege, allowed time and given unlimited labour, the engineers demonstrated remarkable resourcefulness. The supervision of the construction of the Lines of Torres Vedras is an example of what they were capable of.

Each Division of the army had a certain amount of transport under its command, known as the Divisional Train. It was the “workhorse” of the division in terms of carrying stores and supplies. It mainly composed of 26 officers and 402 men of other ranks, who looked after 378 horses, 17 carts, 125 wagons and 30 bicycles.
Therefore although the British army was probably the most mechanized of all the Great War armies, it still relied heavily on horse power for the transportation of supplies, guns, ammunition and men.
Because roads were so completely broken up by alternate frost, snow and rain, the only way to get ammunition to the forward batteries was to carry it up in panniers slung on horses and mules. These “warhorses” shifted millions of tons of rations and ammunition up to the front line.

The statistics show that 900,000 British men died in France between 1914, and 1918, which was 1 in 8 of those who went to war.
A million horses were also sent overseas, only 62,000 were to return.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

The British Mark V tank was an upgraded version of the Mark IV tank, deployed in 1918 and used in action in the closing months of World War I. Thanks to Walter Wilson's epicyclic gear steering system, it was the first British heavy tank that required only one man to steer it; the gearsmen needed in earlier Marks were thus released to man the armament.
The Mark V was first used in the Battle of Hamel on 4 July 1918, when 60 tanks contributed to a successful assault by Australian units on the German lines. It went on to take part in eight major offensives before the end of the War.
Canadian and American troops trained on Mk Vs in England in 1918, and the American Heavy Tank Battalion (the 301st) took part in three actions on the British Sector of the Western Front in late 1918.
During the Battle of Amiens in August 1918, 288 Mark V tanks, along with the new Whippet and Mk V*, penetrated the German lines in a foretaste of modern armoured warfare.

“J17 was in action for 3 ½ hours and fired 70 rounds 6 pdr, 500 rounds SAA. Advanced along Bray Corbie Road, went through enemy barrage in j18d.2.1. Met infantry in k19b and then swung to right of road and fired case shot to silence enemy MGs hidden in the wheat. Met J18and J29 and headed for the Brickyard in k16. Reached k14 then fired on by MG fire from half left, tank turned to engage but had difficulty locating enemy in mist. Eventually an enemy MG opened fire from 50yds, some bullets penetrated the one, one killed the driver. The 6 pdr gunners silenced the enemy MG crew who fled down a communication trench, the tank waited for the infantry and ran over several MGs whilst doing so. The tank followed the communication trench towards k10b cleared up an MG post there and moved towards the Bray Morlancourt Road, where the tank stayed for half an hour mopping up trenches whilst the infantry consolidated. The tank then rallied. “

The 35th Regiment of Foot was active in North America during the French and Indian Wars, from 1756 until 1763.
The unit was probably best known for having served at Fort William Henry, during the siege, when the fort was overwhelmed by French forces commanded by General Montcalm.

That war horse carrying ammo is a different aspect of WW1, very nice coupled with the British tank. Robin.

The British Engineer should look great with the Chippawa Sets. Really looking forward to see what Mike Miller can cobble together with the new additions to the British Artillery Sets plus the older Chippawa releases. I do not collect Chippewa, but I must admit, the British artillery crew would look awesome in the basement. I can count at least 10 figures ---- 5 artillery crew from Chippawa, 3 crew from Napoleonic, the arilllery wagon master, now the Engineer. Plus the regulars from Chippewa ......... really nice!!!

The releases are all great, as usual. The Indian is exceptional, as is the Tommy with the shells. The Mk.V tank is a real standout. Very substantial looking and beautifully marked. -- Al

Another wonderful set of releases from John for the start on the New Year.

I'll be getting the 2 Austrians to go onto the defences of Leuthen, the advancing French Fusilier and the NAP Brit Officer CLUB FIGURE.

Well Done,

John

Very happy with these releases......
Only missing a Culloden release but I am sure they are coming early next year.
Would like to see officers and flag bearers for Leuthen Prussians and Austrians and Peninsular War French.
The Club figure of Howe's 55th Light infantry should be expanded to some action figures.

I am curious to know if John will produce WWI German and British infantry in action?
Right now he is concentrating on vehicles and support figures which complement Britains.
Anyway a lot to look forward to next year.

...I did have my fingers crossed hoping that we'd get something Culloden related for Jan' 14...

...ach well...

...maybe next time !

I really like the WW1 club set. I don't really collect this era other than a few of the planes, but the set really catches my eye.

The Jenkins figures are getting better and better. All of these upcoming releases are stunners IMO. To me the Woodland Indian is top gun, but also the new Peninsular releases and the new Austrians. I am officially stunned...
A case of shock and awe...^&grin
