KNIGHTS OF THE SKIES

The SPAD S.XIII was a French biplane fighter aircraft of World War I, developed by Société Pour L'Aviation et ses Dérivés (SPAD) from the earlier highly successful SPAD S.VII. It was one of the most capable fighters of the war, and one of the most-produced, with 8,472 built and orders for around 10,000 more cancelled at the armistice.

KNIGHTS OF THE SKIES,
SPAD XIII S504,
SPA3, September 1917,
Capitaine Georges Guynemer,
(1pc)

Guynemer started flying this machine in late July, and went on to score his 53rd victory on 20th August 1917. Unfortunately this was the plane in which Guynemer was to mysteriously go missing in, on 11th September 1917.
Guynemer failed to return from the combat mission on 11 September 1917. At 08:30, with rookie pilot Jean Bozon-Verduraz, Guynemer took off in his Spad XIII S.504 n°2. His mission was to patrol the Langemark area. At 09:25, near Poelkapelle, Guynemer sighted a lone Rumpler, a German observation plane, and dove toward it. Bozon-Verduraz saw several Fokkers above him, and by the time he had shaken them off, his leader was nowhere in sight, so he returned alone. Guynemer never came back.

It was a French journalist who explained to schoolchildren, "Captain Guynemer flew so high he could not come down again."

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Finally, my favorite ace's aircraft. With ground crew and Guynemer figure coming soon.^&grin A beautiful job. Thank you, John.:salute:::salute:: -- Al

I SAW THEPROTOTYPE OF THIS SPAD IN CHICAGO AND BELIEVE ME IT IS NICER SEEING IT IN PERSON THAN EVEN THESE PICTURES SHOW. a REAL MUST HAVE

I missed out on Eddie's SPAD . . . . . Will not miss this one . . . .
:smile2: Mike

I note with great satisfaction that John has done his usual outstanding research in terms of the markings, even down to the black flight leaders pennant on the top of the rear fuselage. This particular Spad 13 is an early type as noted by the rounded upper wing-tips, which is correct for S504. Later Spads, like the Rickenbacker model, had squared upper wing-tips. A very attractively painted and marked aircraft from the French 'yellow' period. -- Al

I have pre-ordered ACE-22 SPAD XIII . . . . . Today I cleared a 24-inch area on one of my display shelves to display the SPAD when it arrives as well as the figures of Guynemer and French ground crews when they are finally released . . . . Really looking forward to adding these to my collection and arranging them in the space I have reserved for them . . . . .
:smile2: Mike

The SPAD has now been released for distribution and is showing up in stock at many dealers . . . . .
