New Releases for January 2018 - The Second World War (1 Viewer)

Hey, Joe, I hope you got to see The Flying Fleet on TCM last night. Made in 1929, with no sound, the pilots all wore brown shoes. How was that for timing?:D Decades later, Zumwalt tried to kill ‘em, but Lehman brought ‘em back. It’s all good, indeed!:salute::

Moe . . . You beat me to it . . . . I also watched it last night on TCM . . . . stayed up past my bedtime in order to do so . . . . Fantastic vintage movie clips of US Naval carrier operations, USS Langley, et al. Although in B&W and a silent movie, it was enjoyable to watch, humerus too to watch the competition between the two heroes and their love interest . . . .

Yes I did see The Flying Fleet. It was by accident. Fell asleep watching SAINTS/VIKES, missing an exciting finish. Woke up and watched 11pm news. Then started fishing around for something to watch and there it was. It was pretty good with great aerial shots. Landing on that naked thin deck must have been interesting in those days. I love carrier movies and think we're due for a new one. Love "Fighting Lady", "Wing and a Prayer", "Bridges at Toko Ri", "Midway", "The Final Countdown", "Top Gun" .......what am I missing? I tried to stay up for Combat, but couldn't negotiate that.

Another movie with some carrier shots is "Wings of Eagles", the story of Spig Wead, and early Navy pilot who fought for the carrier Navy. He had an accident and became a desk jockey for a while and finally a writer/screenwriter.

Joe, the story behind The Flying Fleet was written by Frank "Spig" Wead . . . . I agree with your last post - all great movies . . . .

I think he also had something to do with the screenplay for "Wings of Eagles" as well. I went to IMDB, a great source for Actors and Movies, plus........ And he is mentioned in the screenplay list with 2 other writers for that movie. His personal story is incredibly inspirational and he must have been a hell of a guy.

I noticed this morning on the Treefrog JJD WWII inventory that BH-18B Plane Handlers (blue shirts), BH-18G Deck Maintenance (green shirts), BH-18R Ordnance (red shirts), and BH-18N are listed as retired. If true, wow that was fast . . .
