KNIGHTS OF THE SKIES

The Airco DH.2 was a single-seat biplane "pusher" aircraft which operated as a fighter during the First World War. It was the second pusher design by Geoffrey de Havilland for Airco, based on his earlier DH.1 two-seater. The DH.2 was the first effectively armed British single-seat fighter and enabled Royal Flying Corps (RFC) pilots to counter the "Fokker Scourge" that had given the Germans the advantage in the air in late 1915. Until the British developed a synchronisation gear to match the German system, pushers such as the DH.2 and the F.E.2b carried the burden of fighting and escort duties.

All right! Hawker's DH-2 and a superb rendition, at that. Very happy to see this iconic aircraft make it's long awaited appearance. This one jumps to the head of the 'must have' list. Happy day! -- Al

Wow, look at all that bracing-wire and control-cabling! I can't wait for one of these to fly home.:D This model was in development FOR YEARS, so I know that it's something very special.

Something like this would be good for the Fokker Tripe in that it would allow the model to be posed on a stand through its entire 360 degree arc. With the regular fitting, I believe that the poseable arc is slightly less than 180 degrees. That's certainly quite useable, but is somewhat less versatile than when the stands are employed with the other model types.

Having already seen this plane a few months ago, I'm sad that it's eventually come out 🔥💸🔥💸🔥💸😂😂😂

Wonderful release. Would like to see a side by side comparison to the TGM version. Chris

Not having seen the inside of the cockpit, but knowing it will be highly detailed as to usual JJD standards, I wonder if a full-body, seated pilot figure is in the offing for this aircraft. Unlike the other biplanes, or even the Eindecker, that have the small, enclosed cockpits, the DH-2 cockpit sits right out in the open, at the end of the fuselage, and is larger/roomier than the cockpits in the other aircraft. I will be very interested to see if the half-body figures that are currently offered will fit the DH-2, but I think it will be necessary to have a figure with legs and lower body detail to fit and appear accurate in the DH-2. Any thoughts? -- Al

Pilots are N interesting thing and I wonder how many people actually buy/display/use them?

This is probably the best piece (whether plane, figure or AFV) JJD has produced and for me it's to be displayed on the ground with crew doing this and doing that. Personally, I'd like to see crew getting aboard rather than being in the cockpit already. Believe TG did something similar with pilot ascending a ladder? That would be great.

That is certainly an alternative I would like to see, as well. I display all my aircraft with the appropriate pilot figure, so a standing Hawker would be fine by me. All my aircraft are static, not flying, as far as being displayed. Still would like to see a seated pilot, though.:wink2: -- Al

Pilots[...]I wonder how many people actually buy/display/use them?

Hi Vicknor,

Checked the JJD/KotS website just now:

http://www.johnjenkinsdesigns.com/knights.htm

Jenkins lists 9 sets, 4 of them SO and one "low in stock." This certainly suggests that someone is buying them. A little more than half of my collection is on a stand. If it's on a stand, it's got a pilot inserted in the cockpit. I also have pilots in the cockpits of models preparing for takeoff. One of these days, I'll have to dig one of each pilot out of the display and stage a forum beauty contest! As for the discreet personality figures, Guynemer for instance, they are either gazing adoringly at their aircraft on deck or standing beneath it (if it's on a stand).

Hi Al,

We might get a three-quarters-figure like the one that comes with Jenkins' P-26:

Moe, that could work perfectly well, as I'm sure the pilot will need more than just a head and shoulders. Also would need to do away with those unmasculine parachute straps.:wink2: -- Al
