New releases for november 2010 (1 Viewer)

Mike (Sierra)...first off..thank you for posting the JJD November releases...

The Black Watch start with 3 finished sets (4 figures) is really nice...this will be my new series to collect...I'm really happy John is making such a large first offering (3 sets) as I grow impatient quickly waiting for only one set a month...I prefer several sets of each series as opposed to one a month...3 sets is a nice start and I hope he pursues this larger monthly quota...I have grown frustrated with it taking so long to get the Nile Gordons which are coming out so slowly...hopefully next month...he will be caught up enough to start on some FW's and Mahdist...and I hope they come out at least 2-3 sets per month as opposed to only one set a month...we will see...JJ once told me that he feels like he puts out too much some months...forcing the collector to spend more than he wants monthly...but...if they are going to be unlimited...I think this removes the pressure and hopefully he will send out larger monthly offerings...those figures look really nice...the bases with the ground work are so cool...

this picture looks so cool...the abbatis along with all the figures...what a sweet series...

The Gordon Highlander's firing set is going to be a multiple purchase set...just like Niels says...gotta have a lot of these guys...they look great too...

I love the USCH07...the engineer...he will look great on my shelf...

JR19 is my favorite...I had read before that the Jacobites rarely reloaded...one shot and they went to sword...

the QFM06...while JJ allots them perfectly for B of M and Quebec...I see no reason why we can't use them in a pursuit of the Rangers in St. Francis...

Regarding limited editions...I prefer them...

I never collected a series with the sole purpose of reselling them for profit...but it is nice to know that the smaller runs command a nice price when quickly retired...even though they are listed as "not limited"...I think we all know and will all agree...that there will eventually come a time when they are retired...

but from JJ's point of view...he is only selling them and not reselling them...he leaves that for the speculators...I know he feels bad when people tell him that they missed a figure because a small limited run and can't find it anymore...

so while I prefer "small limited runs"...I can certainly understand why he wants an unlimited edition...

all these will retire in time...two 1,000 WIM releases just retired this month...

the QB23 (a 750 release) which just retired....so similar to the new BM25 (a 300 release) might be a good speculation if you're looking for small runs...

all the Returns to Monongahela at these small runs (mostly 375's) might be a good investment...

in fact...I might order duplicates of these right now since they should run out quickly as they are such small runs...

the new Fort Carillon series will be a must for me .....now that the Quebec series has slowed ........:):)

On this notion that limited editions sell out too quickly for collectors to get them, I did a quick check of John's website and found the following (also note that even if a set is listed as "sold out" from John it is often still widely available from dealers):

Culloden:
Brits - none sold out (limited to 500)
Jacobites - none sold out

St. Francis:
Rangers - none sold out (most limited to 500)
Indians - none sold (500)
Canoes - none sold out (500-750)
Whaleboat - limited to 350 and sold out but available at my local dealer

1812:
US - none sold out (500 limit)
Brits - none sold out (500)

Snowshoes:
French/Indians - 4 sets sold out (350-500)
Rangers/Brits - 1 set sold out (350-500)

Quebec:
Brits - 6 sets have sold out
French - none

Monongahela:
French - all have sold out but limited to 250. As of about a month ago my local dealer had FM 03-05 four years after release.
Brits - BM01-10 and 14 sold out. Many were limited to 350 or less. None of the more recent BMs limited to 375-500 have sold out.
Woodland Indians - none sold out

This list is not to say that you cannnot find these pieces at some obscure dealer or even on the shelf of your favorite dealer...

this is the status assigned to JJD inventory...

the list on John's website is old...last update March 2010...

this may help some collectors make up their mind if they need to buy a piece pretty quickly before it retires and the prices inflate on the reseller's market...

Especially QF04 (and this set isn't even limited) and WIM04 are in my experience getting quite hard to find!

yea Niels...both of those are listed as "out of stock"...this list is coming on two months old too...

I was in a shop today and confirmed that items like the Whaleboat, FM-03 and most other sets are still available even though they have long been listed as "sold out" from John. That's a somewhat ambiguous term in this context although even I'm astounded at how few sets are listed as having sold out their limited production run. Particularly since John's #'s reflect all the sets provided to dealers regardless of whether or not they have been sold to customers. Basically most everything can be found from John or the dealers except for a few older, rare items like the BM 01-03s. It may actually require calling around to a dealer to find something, but that is not exactly an extreme burden. My point is that if John or other collectors are concerned about limited items selling out quickly, that concern doesn't appear to be supported by historical sales. Particularly if you are talking about items produced in numbers of 500 or more in the last couple years. And except for a few BMs, many of the these sets can be picked up on ebay for a reasonable price.

However, if John is set on unlimited runs for some reason, then how about doing something like producing a few of the Black Watch figures with blue facings so they could also be used in later battles like Quebec? That's about the only advantage I can see for collectors. From John's perspective, I'm guessing "unlimited" allows him to mirror production levels to actual demand and reduce the risk of overproducing stock that doesn't sell or under producing in cases where sales exceed expectations. Ironically, in some cases that could result in a lot fewer sets being produced with less popular sets than a "limited" release and make it less likely that collectors who wait will be able to purchase it. But none us will ever have that information with unknown production limits. For the reasons noted previously, I don't believe this trend has anything to do with ensuring that collectors have an opportunity to purchase the figures since that is already the case.

Doug...I can't find any of the BM's or FM's in any stores...if you send me the store name that is selling the FM03 at retail....I would be happy to take it off his hands along with any of the BM's on his shelf...I had done a pretty extensive search for these when I was collecting this series...I don't see them anywhere...send me his phone number...I want his FM-03...

please keep in mind this is JJD manufacturer's list of inventory for retailer's ordering queries...he cannot comment or know what is available at his distributors stores...

I personally like limited editions...I like to know that I own something that is retired as I believe one day it will increase in value...even though I don't purchase to resell...it is comforting to know that something I own may appreciate in value...

my television hasn't...my car hasn't...my furniture hasn't...I love the confidence of purchasing something that might appreciate...so I like limited runs...

I have told my sister and friends...forget the stock market...the real money is in flipping soldiers...

from JJ's point of view...inventory is the key along with production runs...I believe he is genuinely distressed when a customer comes to him and says he wanted that figure but got there too late...all I can say...is buy it early so you don't have to chase it...I want limited runs...

Actually I am bit surprised that it is the US 1812 sets, that are selling out first!
I would have thought that the Brit sets with their Napoleonic wars possibilities, would be the most sought after. Could the reason be that the wast majority of John Jenkins collectors are americans, and they go after the US figures before the Brit figures?

And no Mike, you are not the only 1812 collector on this forum;)

Neils...I'm glad somebody else on here is buying these...;)

I know they are selling...as these three sets (USCH08..09 and 10) are already retired at 500 issues...

but I always felt the Colours and officer's sets went quickly in all series...

especially the Colour's sets...

I do agree with you that I thought the British side would have moved faster than the US side becasue of the versatility in the figures for the Nap Wars...

Thought I might pass this along...since we are talking about it...

there are ads for USCH's advertised as "retired" on Ebay...

I believe USCH01...02...03...04...05 and 06 have had their status upgraded to "out of stock" with less than full production runs...which I think means that they (the factory) are out of them and will not run anymore...never reaching a full production run maybe...I'm not sure...again...I may not be interpreting this right...but there are ads on ebay listing them as "retired"...so I may be saying this wrong...

maybe someone else can comment on it...

so...if this is right...with 08-09 and 10 already retired...these pieces may now be very limited...in fact this series may be very limited now...

Mike.....
I am with you on 1812 have them all exept cannons,
will pick them up 1 set at the time.

I think adding this new 3 figures set to the current 1812 US artillery figures...is going to make a really nice crew...I love the guy shielding his ears...great pose...I hope this new set comes out next month...would love to see another set of one guy with a telescope and another guy pointing towards the battlefield...maybe a third with a round in his hands...

I collect both sides of 1812. :) Yes that Howitzer and crew look really good.
