The Russo-Japanese War was fought during 1904 and 1905 between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden in Southern Manchuria and the seas around Korea, Japan and the Yellow Sea.It was the first major military victory in the modern era of an Asian power over a European one.

Military leaders and senior tsarist officials agreed before the war that Russia was a much stronger nation and had little to fear from the Oriental newcomer. The fanatical zeal of the Japanese infantrymen astonished the Russians, who were dismayed by the apathy, backwardness, and defeatism of their own soldiers. The defeats of the Army and Navy shook up Russian confidence. Throughout 1905, the Imperial Russian government was rocked by revolution. The population was against escalation of the war. The empire was certainly capable of sending more troops but this would make little difference in the outcome due to the poor state of the economy, the embarrassing defeats of the Russian Army and Navy by the Japanese, and the relative unimportance to Russia of the disputed land made the war extremely unpopular.Tsar Nicholas II elected to negotiate peace so he could concentrate on internal matters after the disaster of Bloody Sunday on 9 January 1905.

Both sides accepted the offer of United States President Theodore Roosevelt to mediate. Meetings were held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with Sergei Witte leading the Russian delegation and Baron Komura leading the Japanese delegation. The Treaty of Portsmouth was signed on 5 September 1905 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard .

It was a negotiated peace, rather than a complete or crushing victory, but hugely important for Japan's rising status in the world.

I recommend you all to watch a very wonderful film “203 kochi (1980)” about the Russo-Japanese War,which was shot by Toshio Masuda of Japan.Depicts the bloody siege of the fortress Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese War 1904 - 1905.

Another interesting release from Team Miniatures. Like the forethought of creating an entire scene, making it easy for the collector to create a display.
Will definatley be giving these a try.

A long forgotten war and the first major modern war of the 20th Century.

I really like the look of these but that is not surprising for me as I think all of the Team Miniatures releases have been great. What I find interesting is the different themes that other makers have stayed away from. The diorama accessories make the figures stand out and I hope these go with the series. Greg.
Some of my TM figures.

I would say they match up better with WB and FL. Nicely sculpted and painted figures.

Chris, the figures size would be like nysoldiers stated and the bridge was picked up on ebay but don't know the maker. I would have liked TM to have brought out some Boxer figures to compliment the Qing troops. A very interesting period in Chinese history and well portrayed in the film "55 Days in Peking". The films I saw early on have influenced my taste in collecting and i prefer to shy away from the usual themes but if i like it i still collect a bit of every. Regards Greg.

I think the new releases wil sell very well. When i saw the first figures for Peking 1900, i thought that the russians could double for Russo Japanese War and expected the japs. Now we have a new range!Looking with attention some russians seem to be modified Peking figures , nonetheless i think they are wonderful (maybe too white! in the field their tunic tended to be every shade but not so white). Now returning to the Boxer Rebellion we need french and above all Italian Bersaglieri!

Would also like to see some actual Boxers to go with the Imperial Chinese Infantry.

I've been working on my Russo Japanese War diorama and i'm really looking for the release of the Russian figures. One of the things that impressed me when I first saw the figures was the diorama pieces that went with them. A really good idea and the figures are very good as well. If Forum members were to investigate what happened from this period in history you would gain a better understanding of the tension between these countries even today. Some progress photos. Greg.

Lovely dioramas. I have 11 of the 13 Mongols released so far plus 2 of the Mamelukes. I also have 12 Boxer rebellion figures (4x German, US, Russian and Chinese). I do like the Russo/Japanese figures and will dip into these - the Russian machine gunner looks really good. And I admit to liking the controversial Boxer figures representing a Christian massacre. And then there are those Teutonic knights - so many releases and so little cash!

I think TM figures are well priced nice figures which focus on themes not generally covered by other manufactures. I guess it looks as if I am in to TM for the long haul, or at least while they keep spiting out figures that interest me.

Also Mark, the 2nd Sino Japanese War a prelude for Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour. Japan would have had a mistrust of the USA after the Russo Japanese War 1904- 1905 and with their invasion of China in 1937, the USA and Russia were backing China. There is a lot of history here in a 50 year period. Also the invasion of South Korea and Japan's control during the Russo Japanese War. A period of turmoil. Regards Greg.

Waiting on one more figure to complete diorama. Very nice quality figures. Greg.
