THE ANCIENTS COLLECTION
ARMIES AND ENEMIES OF ANCIENT ROME

AERPIC.JPG

The Gauls were Celtic peoples inhabiting Gaul in the Iron Age and the Roman period (roughly from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD).

The Gauls emerged around the 5th century BC as the bearers of the La Tène culture north of the Alps (spread across the lands between the Seine, Middle Rhine and upper Elbe). By the 4th century BC, they spread over much of what is now France, Belgium, Switzerland, Southern Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic by virtue of controlling the trade routes along the river systems of the Rhône, Seine, Rhine, and Danube, and they quickly expanded into Northern Italy, the Balkans, Transylvania and Galatia. Gaul was never united under a single ruler or government, but the Gallic tribes were capable of uniting their forces in large-scale military operations. They reached the peak of their power in the early 3rd century BC. The rising Roman Republic after the end of the First Punic War increasingly put pressure on the Gallic sphere of influence; the Battle of Telamon of 225 BC heralded a gradual decline of Gallic power over the 2nd century, until the eventual conquest of Gaul in the Gallic Wars of the 50s BC. After this, Gaul became a province of the Roman Empire, and the Gauls were culturally assimilated into a Gallo-Roman culture, losing their tribal identities by the end of the 1st century AD.

ROMAN AUXILLIARY CAVALRY

Roman Auxiliary Cavalry were drawn from a wide range of warlike peoples throughout the provinces, especially on the fringes of the empire. They were generally not citizens of the Roman empire.
These auxilia cavalry provided a powerful fighting arm, they were well organized, disciplined, and well trained.

The four horned saddle, which was originally of Celtic origin, was an important part of cavalry equipment.
The four tall horns closed around and gripped the riders thighs, but did not inhibit free movement , which was especially important to spear armed horsemen. In an age which did not have the stirrup, the adoption of the four horned saddle allowed the horsemen to launch a missile effectively, or use both hands confidently to wield a shield and sword, during a melee.

Roman Auxiliary Cavalry formations were recommended that they be deployed in at least two lines, so that there was always a reserve. Most Roman armies formed their cavalry in lines four deep, and usually deployed behind an infantry formation.

These are amazing! Definitely going to be buying these guys. Only....how long before they are at the dealers?

Like these, but will look at the mounted Romans, but need some Brits, Celts or Picts for my 9th Legion to have a little bust up with..........

John has done an excellent job on all of these and I look forward to adding examples to my collection as they become available.

Agree......The K&C, FL and TG Imperial Romans would go better with British Celts. Although the Gallic dress could pass for Brits, some tattooed, lyme dyed hair figures would be better.
John did say that Celts would come and perhaps some Republican Romans!

The cavalry will work in many theaters, however.

The headgear and the shields put me off. They are great, just not my geographical area.

Where did these come from??? Right out of 'left field'. I thought John was only doing Rome's enemies. These look supberb John, where's my dealers number? Just when I thought it was save to go back into the water financially again, these appear to sink me. Robin.

odd question guys your dealer is Treefrog Treasures who else

These Gauls will be making a home in my collection- very very striking figures!!!

Will need to figure out where I can place those Auxiliary cavalry figures. I know my dioramas want them somewhere! {sm4}

Thank you for throwing some love to the Ancients John! :)

John,

I will be adding some of the Gaul warriors to my collection. They look fantastic!

Alex ^&cool:smile2:

Parthians and Jewish rebels would make for great EOR. And would go well with K&C, FL and TG Romans.

To all those Ancient's experts out there,

Do these Gauls work historically with the KC Romans? Aren't the Romans from early empire 1st or 2nd century AD while the Gauls are from late republic BC?

If John is out there, are you going to be doing Romans to oppose these Gauls since you are already doing the auxiliaries?

Both the Gauls and the Auxiliaries look really good. JJD keeps getting better.

Understand they are shipping 14th, cannot wait, these look good. Wondering if the riders are fixed, rather they were. Listed as 6 pieces, for the 2 horse set. Robin.

The Gauls are more suited for Caesar's campaigns in the Republican era. K&C's Romans are of the Imperial era and their Legio XX Valeria Vixtrix did not fight Gauls but did take part in the British invasion.
JJD might do Republican Romans and they will certainly do Celts in the future according to John.
