Roman Archers Newsletter – Forthcoming Releases. From the centre of the Empire in Rome, to the far reaches of Hadrian’s Wall in the North of the Empire, to the hot and desert landscapes of the Roman Eastern Roman frontier. The Roman archer was always on duty, guarding the camp, protecting the ships, hunting for meat to put on the table, ensuring the Emperor’s safety at The Games, quelling civil unrest [keep the plebs in place] and ‘thinning out’ the enemy. Be they defending and cutting down the barbarian attackers or keeping the defenders heads down as the Legionnaires close to finish them off, Roman archers were trained to shoot at a rate of up to 15 arrows per minute. Roman archers were also skilled at shooting at moving targets and could hit a target at distances of up to 300 meters. Thomas Gunn will soon be releasing 4 new Archers, from 2 Roman classic units, the Praetorians and the Roman Auxiliaries. Praetorian Archers. The Praetorian Guard was a unit of the Roman military that served as the personal bodyguard of the Roman emperors. These archers were part of the broader Praetorian Guard and specialized in archery. Keeping threats away from the Emperor, defending the great and the good while travelling, putting a few arrows into a unruly crowd, their use was widespread and the bow was also seen as a symbol of power, having a religious and symbolic place in Roman society. Roman Auxiliary Archers. Known as Sagittarii [pural form of Sagittarius], archers who served in the Roman army, these units were often recruited from non-Roman areas and specialized in archery. They played a significant role in Roman military campaigns, providing ranged fire support, keep the enemy, whether on foot or mounted, at more than arm’s length. Enabling the legions to take the fight to the enemy much earlier than the ‘sword’ can. We hope you enjoyed this preview, these figures are available in the next couple of months or so. Best wishes The Team @ Gunn |
