New SOHK diorama with new K&C set# HK214, etc. (2 Viewers)

After some revising, downsizing and relocating of a prior diorama I ended up with a top of a bookcase with display space of about 28 by 11 inches ready for something new. After thinking over at least a few possibilities I ended up with getting the new K&C set# HK 214 "Chinese Wedding Party" from K&C's Streets of Old Hong Kong (SOHK) series as the center piece of the new diorama. The new diorama is within about 45 inches away from my main SOHK display witch is at 29 by 84 inches. I got the new HK214 and also the fairly new HK191 "Chinese Gate" just today from my local dealer. I also transferred a few sets from my large SOHK display to complete the new diorama, namely, K&C sets# HK135 (Stone Carvers); HK111 (Grandpa smoking a pipe while sitting), HK079 (Grandma holding a baby) and HK 046 (bench). My wife is happy I did not have just another military diorama, but I did not tell her about the cost!

By the way, does anyone know what the lady walking by the sedan chair holding an umbrella is suppose to represent???

Hi Gary,

Excellent new acquisition of the Chinese Wedding Party set HK214. I see that you continue to expand your Streets of Old Hong Kong collection. The lady walking by the sedan chair holding the umbrella may be the "mother-in-law" waiting to have a whack on the new "son-in-law" with the brolly. Just kidding.^&grin

the lady is there ready to open the brolly to cover the sun or rain whenever her master comes out....no?!

I had a thought whilst admiring your new SOHK sets. Is there space in your main SOHK display to accomodate the Wedding Party set ? It would be look very grand with the colourful facades as a backdrop.

Well done Gary - my wife has been after a set of these for her collection - cost wise you get quite a few figures for the money.

great picture of a great range. I have the wedding set and the new boat but, would like to have a larger collection of this range but, will just cherry pick from it every now and then.

Thanks for your second posting to my new Thread on my K&C HK214, etc diorama. It is interesting that you brought this subject of placing the HK214 set of the "Wedding Party" on to our large already set up Streets of Old Hong Kong display. After I set up the new HK214 & HK191 "Chinese Gate" I did think about how it might fit into the main SOHK display. I decided that it of course could fit on to the big display area, but only at the expense of removing a whole bunch other SOHK HK sets to make room for the fairly large HK214 set. Then too there would be the question as to where to place the HK191 Chinese gate set as well. It is funny that Karen also came up with the same idea soon after I showed her the new SOHK dioarma which I also referred to to her as her "Widow's Pension Plan" if I die before her, ha, ha. I noted to her the problem of removing too many HK sets to allow space for the large HK214 set.

She then had the very good idea of adding the HK135 set of the "Stone Carvers" from the old SOHK display to the new diorama to be placed to the left of the Chinese gate HK191. We then both agreed to place the two grandparent figures with grandchild (K&C sets# HK111 & HK079) on the bench (HK046) to the right of the Chinese gate set. As K&C set HK214 is a such special set I think it deserves to be the center of attention. However, if I did not already have so many HK sets on our large 29 by 84 inch SOHK display already your idea would indeed have been a good one!

Hi Gary,

I did some reading on the traditional Chinese Wedding Ceremony. The figure of the lady walking by the sedan chair holding the umbrella may be the "good luck woman" assigned by the bride's parents to attend to the bride or one of the bride's sisters. The duty of the lady with the traditional red coloured parasol was to protect the bride from the elements, be it the sun or rain. What a lovely display Gary. Such splendid figures and glorious colours in them. I think this is one of the most attractive ranges K&C produce and packed with sets full of interest. Well done.

I had sent an E-mail to Andy Neilson at K&C relative to a few questions I had on the new K&C set# HK214. The main points that Andy replied back to was that the sole person in the sedan chair is indeed the BRIDE and the lady walking along side the sedan chair with the red umbrella is the MATCHMAKER who gets her second half of her fee upon delivery of the bride to the marriage site.
