I had seen some photos of these a couple of days ago and was quite impressed.

They're limited to 8 each so if you're interested I wouldn't delay.

Gorgeous pair of Warbirds. Really nice together. -- lancer

Great pictures of the 2 new "tropical" warbirds.

ie: Spitfire Mk.VB Tropical & Hurricane Mk. IIB Tropical

Very appropriately photographed to show the characteristic Vokes air filters under the nose of each.

It is always nice to see another Spitfire, even the ugliest one (which is a bit of an oxymoron). Besides being ugly, the Vokes filter reduced the Mk Vs speed by over 15 mph and added over 30 seconds to the climb time to 20,000 feet. Not surprisingly it was universally despised by pilots and a much better alternative was soon developed by the Aboukir Maintenance Unit and soon distributed to most desert units. The resulting Aboukir filter restored most of the non-tropicalized performance and with the internal filter component removed could be used without further modification in non desert regions. Ultimately improvements in the intake design obviated the need for either in Mark IX and latter models. The photo below shows respectively, the redesigned late Mark intake, the Aboukir and the Vokes.

When you consider that they are made from wood that is first class workmanship giving a very impressive finish.

When you touch them, it doesn't fee like wood, but almost metallic. They're not like the older wooden kind. Those look like and feel like wood. These are completely different. If you looked at them, unless someone told you, you probably wouldn't think they're made of wood. How they do it, I don't know.

Brad, thats interesting, perhaps the paint has a metallic filler added during the spraying process. Whatever it is certainly gives a first class finish.

Hi Spitfrnd,

Thanks very much for the additional information on the air filters.

Here is a link to another website showing the types of air filters as fitted to the Spitfire Mark V:

Kind Regards, Raymond.:)
