Well as its Waitangi day in NZ I thought I would post up a few shots of the NZ land wars. They started in 1845 and went on until the 1880's. The Maori proved to be formidable foes for the British. The red coated British troops struggled against a guerrilla Maori army that used hit and run tactics. They also built Pa's (earthwork forts) which the British struggled to take. Once the British got close to the forts they were then be abandoned only to pop up somewhere else.

In the 1860's the British had changed to a campaign blue uniform but by 1866 the regular army departed leaving armed constabulary to fight on where trouble still flared up.

Enjoy
Gary

Yes Regal figures. I got them when I first arrived in NZ four years ago. Went to this small town for a ride out one Saturday and found two shops selling toy soldiers! I had to move their!. Wished I had got them done in matte but too late now and will stick with the gloss finish. I plan at some stage to get some latter Maori's from the 1860's who wore more settlers clothing and also get a 'gunfighters Pa' made.

This afternoon I arrived home to find a small carry bag from the Auckland War Memorial museum sitting on our kitchen bench with a hand written message on it from my sister in-laws hubby, saying 'Toddy here's some old lead soldiers a friend was going to throw out.'

Unbelievable, I open the bag and find two red 'Regal' box's, containing one Maori warrior & in the other, one British soldier in perfect condition! I recognised both figures instantly as two of a couple of your figures displayed below.

I was quite stunned, especially as the friend was having a clean out and was going to biff them out.

They really are very nice. He was me admiring your collection this morning and bang, out of the blue these two show up.....simply amazing.

I have been collecting for a long time now and it never ceases to amaze me how much enjoyment I still get from the hobby, the thrill of seeing other's collections and all the other little surprises ( like this one) that present themselves from time to time.

May it never end. :salute::

Well Well the magic of Waitangi weekend! Gedon and go well mate.I would really like some NZLW stuff in matte but can't afford the distraction from everything else I plan to buy.

Such wonderful figures depicting a lost time; this is the exact reason why the hobby is so enjoyable; scale, size, colour, medium etc is simply immaterial to the actual subject and sums up the exact reason why manufactures make a product and collectors buy the product.

Just fantastic!

Cheers Scott

I hope you do pick up those other figures. I took a look at their website and the NZ Land Wars is a wonderful series. It's nice that New Zealand has a toy soldier maker to reproduce its history in miniature.

I think the matt figures would do well, particularly if they could reproduce some of the facial & body tattoo's for the Maori. The idea of building a Pa fortification to go with the figures would also work well too.

Although the history of the NZLW's is not well known amongst the TS community, collecting British troops battling against indigenous people's during the 1800's is very popular; you only have to look at the various Zulu wars figures for example.

Food for thought anyway and yes we are very lucky to have the likes of 'Regal' & 'Imperial' producing some wonderful figures. (Not sure if Imperial is still operating any-more though).

Cheers.

Really Great sets and some good stories! I was glad the guy gave you the figures Toddy and didnt toss them in the bin! I was down in NZ in the early 90s and bought several sets of Maori figures and some other interesting sets. Wish I had bought some others but it was the honeymoon and my wife had other ideas about where to spend the cash...

Very cool thread! Hope to see more sets soon
