JJDESIGNS NEWS UPDATE 6th JUNE 2022
THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA
THE POWHATAN

1POW-M.jpg

The Powhatan people may refer to any of the indigenous Algonquian people that are traditionally from eastern Virginia. It is estimated that there were about 14,000-21,000 Powhatan people in eastern Virginia, when English colonists established Jamestown in 1607.

In the late 16[SUP]th[/SUP] and early 17[SUP]th[/SUP] centuries, a “Mamanatowick” (paramount chief) named Wahunsenacawh created an organization by affiliating 30 tributary peoples, whose territory was much of eastern Virginia.
They called this area Tsenacommacah (“densely inhabited land”).
Wahunsenacawh came to be known by English colonists as “The Powhatan Chief”.
Each of the tribes within this organization had its own Weroance (leader), but all paid tribute to the Powhatan Chief.

After Wahunsenacawh’s death in 1618, hostilities with colonists escalated under the chiefdom of his brother, Opchanacanough, who sought in vain to expel encroaching English colonists.
His large scale attacks in 1622 and 1644 met strong reprisals by the colonists, resulting in near elimination of the tribe.
By 1646, what is called the Powhattan Paramount Chiefdom by modern historians had been decimated.
More important than the ongoing conflicts with the English colonial settlements was the high rate of deaths the Powhattan suffered due to new infectious diseases carried to North America by Europeans, such as measles and smallpox.
The native Americans did not have any immunity to these, which had been endemic in Europe and Asia for centuries. The wholesale deaths greatly weakened and hollowed out the native American societies.

By the mid-17[SUP]th[/SUP] century, the leaders of the colony were desperate for labor to develop the land. Almost half of the European immigrants to Virginia arrived as indentured servants.
As settlements continued, the colonists imported growing numbers of enslaved Africans for labour.
By 1700 the colonies had about 6,000 black slaves, which was one-twelfth of the population.

After Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676, the colony enslaved the native Americans for control. In 1691, the House of Burgesses abolished native slavery, however many Powhatan were held in servitude well into the 18[SUP]th[/SUP] Century.

There are several detailed accounts of the Powhatan peoples, but we are fortunate to have the exquisite water-colours of John White, who was the governor of the second Roanoke Settlement.
Luck would have it he was gathering supplies in England when his colony vanished.

The main weapon of all the Indians faced by the English settlers during this period was the longbow. This measured 5-6ft. and was made from witch-hazel or hickory.
It was noted that the Indian bows were quick, but not very strong or accurate.

The first of the Powhatans should be available towards the end of this year.

Best wishes and many thanks,
john jenkins

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUBMITTED A PRE-ORDER FOR THE KEELBOAT.

THE WSP-100 and WSP-101/WSP-102 WILL NOW BE RESTOCKED,

NO RELEASE DATE AT THIS TIME.

I have nearly all the Aztec range, but will give these a miss, they do look brilliant and i am sure they will be a winner, just not an era that interests me. Plus JJD are attacking my TS funds on multiple dimentions and levels, Saxons/Viking, Rome's Enemies, Almoravids, Trojans and the odd attack slips through with WW2 and WW1 stuff.

WW1 - the Luft/RFC ground crews are excellent. Compliment my TGM WW1 planes.
WW2 - just started with the Pacific aircraft, got me a Corsair and 6 deck crew, will be definately buy more deck crew. In the long term look at building a deck for them, therefore will be asking TFroggers on advice on the deck layout and colour etc. Will not get the JJD decks as mine will have to be scratchbuild to fit space.
Almoravids - do not where this range is going and still need a couple of sets [the ones dressed in Black] to complete the range, but if no more in the future then i guess i will have to get the Sand/Tan coloured sets.
Rome's Enemies - still 18 sets to go, have all the Iceni, but we could do with another British tribe adding to the series, PICTS.
Trojans - have 14 figures, but they are a colourful and make a great addition to my collection.
Saxons/Viking - 15 sets to go, my favourite range at the minute. It goes from strength to strength.

Agree. Everything John does is absolutely fantastic. Would love to collect it all but there is just too much. I suppose that is a good problem to have! This is a fascinating line with a lot of interesting possibilities, though. Some Roanoke Island-relatedfigures would also be great.

Great scupts! Growing up in Virginia, learning history of the early settlement at Jamestown among the native Indians who lived there, this will be an exciting group of figures! Wonder what John has in store for early European explorers?

The Jamestown historical site is very interesting & vastly improved since more recent archeology has uncovered new discoveries there. The adjoining museum is very rich w/ its artifacts on display. Well worth the trip there. Also, there is an Indian decendent who presents the history from the Indian's POV. I could have listened to him all day!

On a side note about early Jamestown, go watch Terrence Malick's movie, "The New World." Putting aside the usual Captain John Smith/Pocahontas love story, the portrayal of the native Indians is very accurate.

Looking forward to this line of figures.

Roanoke Island - be careful some of the figures may just dissappear...............

Is there any new evidence or ideas what happened there?

Plenty of theories (per the endless cable shows on the topic) but few answers. Likely to never be resolved. Most probably absorbed into the Native American community or maybe wiped out by the same. There are some amazing advances in DNA technology. That might be only way any further light is shed on the topic as there are direct descendants on both sides.
