Hi All,

I came across this figure, New Hope Design, of an Iraqi bagpiper. However, I didn't see this listed under the NHD files on Mirof's site.

Not the most inspired of castings, it does have its appeal to me, as a musician. For some reason, I had decapitated it, presumably for a conversion but then abandoned it. So here it is, in its divided state, for which I intend to rejuvenate for my collection.

Hi All,

I finally tracked this piece down to an illustration in MAA 128 Arab Armies in the Middle East by Laffin and Chappell. Inside, a plate shows a PLO bagpiper.

Fascinating! In regards to the Iraqi bagpiper, if you have any questions about it, I can contact a friend of mine who is an officer in the Iraqi military.
The PLO image is interesting.... The idea of depicting a current terrorist is a bit off-putting for me, but I can understand it. I have pictures of some current PA armed personnel that I took, if anyone wants them. They are way less uniform than that illustration suggests.

Interesting... I never knew the Iraqis or Palestinians had bagpipes. I guess it just shows you how far Britain's influence reached.
Cheers,
Brendan

Both have been underBritish control at one time or another. Aparently there's a saying in Iraq. "If you trip over a stone in the road, it's because an Englishman put it there." I'm guessing we were't that popular!^&grin Of course who invented the bagpipe any way?

Exactly! but refined by the British.

Question, what is the difference between the Highland pipes and the Northumbrian pipes. Answer, the Northumbrian pipes are a MUSICAL instrument! :)

Hello All,

I thought Martin was having us on. There actually is a bagpipe museum at Northumberland.

Thanks for all your comments. I've reattached the head and all the tubes with wire inserts for strength. The arms and all joints are epoxied into position. The tubes are all drilled out. I've resulted some areas to make the piece look more natural.

I have added ears (important to a musician) and redid his nose. Also added eyes. The left hip has been bulked up to balance the stance. Figure will need some cleaning up.

I filed down the upper right arm and started to paint the figure.

The face was repainted. Finally took the step of gluing a strip of sheet metal to the pipes to strengthen their attachment to each other. Then I wound a length of copper wire around the pipes. The tassels were carefully drilled to insert the wires. This was a fiddly moment.
