set off with a flourish building my long self promised nile gunboat, i was not too sure if i should build it as a stern or side paddle boat, i still dont know which way to go ..and it doesnt look too much like a gun boat either, so i`ll keep building and see what comes out, whatever happens it will be a nile something or other... i hope....it may even join the Texas in the bin if it dont shape up soon !

side or stern paddle or screw ? any suggestions, the plan is to round off the backend thats why it is just a blank piece of wood at the mo, to make it screw powered, but i was going to make two removeable side paddle boxes to fit if i preferred, the upper deck will have a wheelhouse smokestack and covered promenade deck to the rear i dont know if a third deck would look the part, again suggestions are invited

I wouldn't do a third deck just because they tend to look top heavy. I would go with side paddles as they aren't many about in 1:32 so would be a little bit different.

Side paddles always look neat. How about that for some advice: it's "neat." :)

Side paddles get the vote from me:cool:

Cheers

Martyn:)

Side paddles; 2nd deck and wheelhouse.
Add barricades; sand bags; a platoon of infantry and and lots of guns and gunners. Pour the wood to the boiler and you are off to war.................

If she was mine - I would probably been unable to resist having as many guns fitted (albeit temporarily), as I could cram in, from day one! She's gonna be a beauty. Given my past record with super-glue however, don't let me near it - as you won't get it off the desk!

Side-paddles sound great - as you can have some of the guys poking their weapons around the sides - and stuff like that! Will she be a floater? Just think what a stir you would cause at the local park - if you turned up and disturbed all of those posh old geezers in their blazers sailing yots!!

Lastly, can I come round to play when she's ready? johnnybach

p.s steevee

Any chance of some "plans" post-launch - I quite fancy a go at a sister-ship - if my wife lets me have some glue again! - johnnybach

IMHO you should really decide first what kind of GB you are building:
there were many types of them:1898-class gunboats with "double screw" app. 145 ft long, 1896-class stern-wheeler was app. 140 ft long,
and early models from early 1880s were 90 ft long, and some small GBs only 40 ft long with a draft only about 2 ft.,
they all used different type of machine guns and cannons...
However if you are just building " imaginary" GB all above do not matter :D
Al

i`ll post you some dimensions and materials ...scrap wood basically

after a couple of weeks away from the garage i`ve had another play around with the nile boat, a rough built lower wheelhouse cabin...in what i think is roughly the right place, rough engine house and rounded crew cabin to the rear ...then a roughly made paddlebox, this model is begining to sound a bit rough! i have made the paddlebox as a removeable feature as i cannot make up my mind as to whether i like it or not, so i`ll crash on and see if it appeals to me when i`ve got rid of the rough bits

I like it but since Al seems to know what he's talking about, I'll defer to him.

Al seems to know his stuff, and he is right about having some idea of what you want to do at the start of the build, so my excuse for bombing along without a giving it a second thought, is rather than build a bonafide gunboat...downgrade it to a river cruiser, so at best it`ll have to be a vessel that has been drafted into the war effort or something along those lines.

I personally don't care if it is accurate or not. I looks great so far and I think it will look great with glossies :D:D:D
