Nile something or other (1 Viewer)

got the stern lower deck in place as well now...as for the upper deck i have made it the same length as the lower one... but i might shorten it to follow the contour of the engine room crew cabin, because i need to build some sort of staircase back there too...one thought i had was to put stairways up along the back slopes of the paddleboxes..novel but probably very inaccurate. anyway the wheelhouse roof is on and the whole thing is ready to nail down, i think i may put a low engine room roof and a smoke stack housing on the upper deck and maybe line it with seating either side too

IMO, I would keep the side wheels which makes it more unique. Either funnel would work, but you might decide after the finished product to make that decision, which looks right. I envy your woodworking talent. Michael

Re: Henhouse ?

i have fitted a henhouse for the engine room roof vents, and opted for the black thinner funnel then began to hand rail the upper decks, going leave it alone for a while now and catch up on a load of other stuff i`ve got to be getting on with.... i think the chicken shed may have to go..

Great work! You have real skill with wood - I'm jealous!! :D
Looking forward to the next stage.

What's the little beauty in the corner on the floor of the first picture below? Looks like another boat?

hi pj. the ship on the floor is the USS.Choctaw.... or at least my version of it, as for the nile boat i`m hoping to see the backend of it in place this weekend...and the chicken shed will have to go too, i`ve decided its bloody horrible, i`ll have to try something else instead

Very nice woodworking on your gun boats. I enjoy watching your progress and also the cabinets you made. Are you a professional woodworker? Thanks for photos and explanations of your progress. J

i wish i had taken an interest in woodwork at school, if my memory serves me right i think i made a cheeseboard with an inlaid tile at one end for cutting. and this was achieved at the age of 12 with much help from teacher.. i went on to become a lorry driver.

I still think you acquired these skills by working hard on this hobby. I tried woodworking years ago and bought tools and books on it. I built a workbench and a cabinet which my wife said it looks like a "mouse house". :D After that, I gave up woodworking.

My mouse house is in the outer garage holding garden tools. Your cabinets look good. I bought a few smaller cabinets for shelves at shows the last few years. J

well i did`nt get to see the back end of the nile boat on this weekend as planned..far too busy making up cabinets, ready for next weeks show in stafford, but anyway back to the boat i threw away the chicken shed (but just in case i noted where it landed) and then went on to replace it with a lower cabin roof with port holes and the early signs of the seating arrangements, next on to the boiler, a cobbled up a replacement smoke stack base and boiler top half housing.... replaced unfortunately with something that looks like some kind of mutant dalek!... hopefully when its painted it will look right, and then because i`m getting a little fed up with the slowing progress of the project i`m not going to build any staircases, instead i`m going to cheat by putting in "hatched" stairways...they should look nice when the hardwood framed doors go on and i will put 1 or maybe 2 more posher ones just behind the wheelhouse as imaginary access for passengers to the lower saloon, a slap of paint and just the back end to finish off...and we`re done !! ...then on to who knows what!

pricing i find very difficult, i build them for pleasure and do not have a "for sale" price in mind, however i do have friends who are in and know the toy soldier industry who advise me on what to ask for ...this price is to my mind way above what i am happy to let them go for sometimes by hundreds of £`s and so the CSS. Arkansas went for £150.00, and cairo i think was 175 or maybe 200 i really can`t remember the exact price...i think i had the monitor up for 175..tennessee 150...albermarle 150.. choctaw 175 and benton i think was 200 but i find that at the toy soldier shows as with everything else prices are subject to offers made by the collectors, do the sold models may have been priced higher than stated. time spent and materials used means i could not earn a living out of selling these models as like other builders on here it is a hobby and as such you do not realise the models worth to anyone who may want one, but better than money you do get a great buzz when a buyer comes along...i hope that makes some kind of sense

Does anyone miss the chicken shed?

oh dear here i go again the dalek has to go ! this smoke stack thingy is starting to delay the project no end, but it`ll have to look right to me before i go on

after an excellent hectic london toy soldier show and the very very busy aftermath trying to build up and maintain more cabinets and cases for the various shows we attend plus the new one ..or at least its new to us..the plastic warrior show in a few weeks time, we have found a moment to try to catch up with things...so i dusted off the old (and getting older) nile steamer that i started back at the turn of the century...or thats how it feels to me,... i find it very difficult to pick up a project once i`ve put it down, so all i have managed to do is make a start the stern upper deck railings...ended up leaving the dalek inspired boiler/smoke stack thingy in place ...i must have glued some bits and bobs down, then probably tarted some other stuff up a little too..... and then...straight back into making more cabinets and cases again....it.... the steamer, will be at the next london show either finished or as an ongoing project for someone with more patience and hopefully a bit more time to pig about with it than me!
steve.
