Yesterday evening the emblematic church of Paris 900 years old burned .
All the roof and frame burned down, 1000 oaks were used to build it, all wood was still originals 900 years old
The spire colapsed ( 93m high ) and crashed in the middle of the nave
Volunteers firemen had just the time to save some of the church treasures; a cross nail, the thorn crown,
The main altar is save
Already reconstruction is decided, it will take 10th of years....

Very sad to hear of this, an icon of Western Civilization, not just of France. Best wishes to the French people at this time.

I am amazed that essentially no one got injured. Concerned about the art, in particular the stained glass windows. I think everything was original, no replicas. It will be a question becoming more and more relevant whether original art can still be displayed in public or needs to be replaced by replicas.

What a tragedy. Visited the cathedral in 1980. I heard a report it took the fire engines two hrs to reach the scene, heavy crowds blocking the streets, etc. Is that true? Chris

Terrible tragedy. Glad to hear no one was hurt though. It will be interesting to see what the investigators piece together. I can't believe how old sections of that church were.

So a guy wakes up in the hospital and his nurse tells him that he has been in a coma for 850 years. And the guy says "I can't wait to see how Notre Dame turned out."
