Old Toy Soldier Interest (1 Viewer)

Hi Michael,

The movies were very cool but I love the books so much more because Hakeswell was even more evil in the books. I just finished the latest book in the series it was top notch Sharpe and Harper at their best.

All the best

Dave

Obediah was a right evil git. What is the name of the new book? Yes the books are better. Is that not always the truth? You must give Peter Postlethwaite his do. He gives a great performance as Sgt.Hakeswill. I have all the movies though not all the books. I am going to have a Waterloo night in the near future. It will feature of course the Sharpes version as well as the Rod Steiger version.

My main war video guy has a $5,000 reward out for the original 6 hour relese of Waterloo. Many do not know that we are looking at a chopped up 2 hour hiccup of the whole masterpiece....Michael

I would be one of the many, but, no longer. 6 hours?

Hi guys,

the latest book to hit here for the Sharpe's series is titled Sharpe's Fury takes place around the Battle of Barrosa. It was a fun read! I hope to see the Sharpe show repeated on BBC America again soon so I can try and see a few of the ones I've missed.

Have a great day

Dave

I do collect both lines of figures- i do like the direction KC is going with their figures but am worried that it has become a market that is paralyzing itself with burning and turning the retired pieces. I only ever once considered buying a KC retired piece. The dealer had it on his website but then told me it was sold already- it had been on for a day or so and he hadn't even had time to get the webmaster to remove the figure from sale.

For me though, Britains is where it all began- Deetail figures when I was a kid and then Agincourt when I get a bit older- The Durbar elephant is fun. Still kicking myself in the tail for not buying that FANTASTIC mother male that came out a couple years ago.

Another reason I love the Britains figs is the inexpensiveness of them and the heritage of the hobby behind those figures. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can consider themselves a fan of this hobby without paying homage to the true "King". The history and heritage of the hobby flys with Britains. Perhaps some of the newer collectors would understand what Britains is really about if they were to see some of the sets from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Especially with the boxes to boot.

And I am 34.

Hi Chris,

I am glad you collect some of the other things besides K&C. The WWI Tank is a great piece and I am glad I have it. I am really looking forward to the new MK IV coming from Northwest. They are also susposed to produce an A7V which is very cool. I just hope they produce the crewmembers too. They are also doing a very nice Renault that I plan to add to my pile of stuff soon. Also dont worry I see the Mark I Mother on ebay every now and then and its not priced to kill so you may be able to score one soon. I take it by the avatar and name you're an Airborne Alum from the 101 or 82. I'm an old Tanker 2AD before they reflagged and 1AD. Look forward to chatting with you.

All the best

Dave

Hello Dave-

Thanks for the kind words- yeah, I actually spread it around quite a bit- I collect East of India for my samurais and ancients, St. Pete for my Romans and Medieval figs, KC for my WW2 and Britains usually if something catches my eye- usually older figures from the sixities and earlier. I find the whole KC craze pretty amusing. I guess being somewhat knowledgable of the history of Toy Soldiers, I cannot for the life of my understand why these guys are buying some of those sets with so many "historic" pieces (britains) floating around out there- this is, in my opinion, a great time to scoop up some of those old figures people have looked over for many years. Always seems like the Mother Male comes up whenever the defense budget has been depleted.

Plus, my daughter enjoys the farm animals :D

Believe it or not, I was in the Second ID. The 1/506, when I was with them in 1991, was attached with the Second ID on the DMZ there in Korea. We are air assault now. It was fun going to that unit as perhaps half of the battalion was privates- you see all these guys running around with their basic training ribbon and on the other side on their chest we have all those unit citations. I remember several of us used to wonder "Hey, what kind of unit was this??" My old CSM overheard us one day (Ranger, 1st Cav vet from Nam- door gunner)- he just smiled and laughed and went about his business. Funny thing about the 506- we had a lot of great soldiers in there during Viet Nam as well. After my wife saw Band of Brothers- she looked at me like I was some kind of super macho rambo trooper- I had a hard time telling her I was far from it :D :D

Hey- thanks for your responses too about my Napoleonics questions as well.

To each his own but many of us wouldn't be in this hobby but for K & C. I think they're the best thing out there on the market and there are a lot of people out there (obviously) who want to own the old stuff. That's why the prices are crazy. It's been discussed here before ad infinitum so no need to rehash old ground. I don't really want to own old Britains but do like, although I don't own them, some of the old style glossy soldiers like Trophy and Imperial, which I think are very cool, not to forget Beau Geste, of which I happen to own a couple of sets.

I picked up this piece on ebay a few days ago, no figures and a busted rear wheel , which I have already replaced and repainted.......Which Britains Tank, would this be ? ( only $80 includes shipping ) Michael

Yes many people on this forum got into the hobby because of K&C. But I think far more people in the hobby got into it because of Britains. That's obvious. I guess because Britains is K&C's main competition, you guys make sure to never give them credit.

Hi Maddadicus

Thats the Britains Mark 1 Mother Male set number 8946. Its a nice piece and even with the damage you got a good deal.

Hi Jrsteel,

I couldnt agree more with you! As for the negative comments about Britains lets not go there since Britains was for most of us the starting point and we all know that so no need to beat a dead horse.

All the best

Dave

GREAT PRICE!! You did it right!!! The one dealer I go to in Stroudsburg (Pa)- had one of those for the longest time- If memory serves, he wanted like $145 or so for it. I waited too long.

The one thing that is somewhat of a drawback on that tank at the time, was that it seemed like Britains was still doing their figures in glossy and the Mother Male was matte finished so it looked a little funky all put together.

That's a great piece though and could easily be a centerpiece of a collection. I would possibly look at keeping the damaged artillery piece as part of a really cool battlefield diorama

I should have only spoken for myself but I also do feel that I speak for newer collectors. I agree with you that probably many others got into this hobby because of Britains because they're the grand old name in the hobby.

As far as K & C giving them credit, to be honest, when I think of K & C's competition, I don't really think about them. I'm not trying to slight Britains but when I think of competition, I think of Honour Bound, Figardi and NMA.

I don't want to turn this into a huge controversy. As you know I like the traditional toy soldier and have several. I don't think there is any reason to quarrel about it :)

No quarrel. Like you said to each his own. When I think of toy soldiers, I'd never even think of HB, Figarti or NMA. They're more like model WW2 German tank companies.

That's actually an interesting question. While I love the K & C stuff, I don't know that they're really toy soldiers anymore, more like military miniatures in the truest sense of the word due to the realism. Yes, we call them toy soldiers but there's obviously a difference between the way the traditional toy soldier looks and these modern day military miniatures.

Without putting too fine a point on things, this is the Britains thread. We can discuss just how great K and C is on the dedicated K and C thread and the Britains folks can discuss how great Britains is on this thread. That is certainly what a lot of folks over on the K and C thread say when people post pictures or discuss other manufacturers over on that thread. As a former prime minister of South Africa said when he was asked about apartheid "Good fences make good neighbours"
