I just saw, for the first time, the Australian production of "On the Beach" done in 2000. I do not know how I missed this fantastic film for nine years. It stars Armand Assante, Rachel Ward, and Brian Brown. IMO it is superior to the original that starred Peck, Gardner, and Astaire. Obviously, it is the same story of nuclear doomsday but it is updated and very believably done. I found it very gripping and was quite relieved that we haven't pushed the button...yet. Well worth watching, especially if you liked the original film. -- lancer

An often overlooked movie and I have to agree it's much better than the original. I am a fan of Jacqueline McKenzie who is a very good actor being a stand out in the Aussie movie Romper Stomper with Russel Crowe but not so great in Deep Blue Sea - but who was ;) :D

I think the original is still a great movie, especially at the end. I will be on the lookout to see if I see a copy of the re-make in the USA.

It will be worth the time Gary. The only thing about the remake that didn't quite cut it was the ending. It was kind of a wuss-out, against character. Does not ruin the movie though as it didn't really change result. -- lancer
