I have this book for sale, Ordeal by Fire: The Civil War and Reconstruction, fourth edition, by James McPherson and James Hogue, $70, free shipping anywhere within the US! It's very detailed, it's a more of a serious study and more in depth than McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Look it up on amazon to read reviews about it. I have it on ebay, so if someone bids on it, I can't remove it, but if one of you guys want it before then, I'll take it off ebay and give you $10 off what I have it listed for on "fee-bay."

This books get high marks, especially for the recent fourth edition and the addition of James Hogue, who contributed his expertise on Reconstruction. It's also used by schools as a textbook, which probably accounts for the price.

You're right Brad, and actually I used it for a grad. level Civil War class. My professor said that Battle Cry of Freedom was more for a general audience, whereas this book is meant for more serious students of that era, hence why colleges use it as a textbook.....I think he pretty much summed it by saying that.

Also, sorry, I forgot to mention the condition of the book, I would rate it as "very good" condtion. I wouldn't say "like new" because to me that would mean it looks brand new, as if if had never been read. But I used it for class, but I didn't make marks in it, the pages are in great shape, and so is the cover, there are no creases or bends or rips/tears, binding is still tight.
