Just watched the last episode of the 2nd Underbelly series.
For those overseas if you see the name in your TV or cable guide give it a look.
The first series is about the gang wars in Melbourne in the late 90's early 2000's when there were over 20 gangland killings. This series could not be shown in the state of Victoria due to ongoing trials. It was the highest rating TV series in Oz and as a result they did the second series.
The second series was set mainly in Sydney in lates 70's early 80's and the main bad guy was a Kiwi drug dealer named Terry Clarke.
Not many characters survive and worth a look. If you have young kids watch out as there is a quite a bit of violence and flesh.
Another older series (about 1997) is called Blue Murder about police corruption in NSW.
Regards
Brett

Sounds like the Aus version of the Wire

Underbelly is terrific and in a documentary/drama style.

Rob, what's The Wire, I remember a UK series called "Wire in the Blood" which was dark but good, but I guess that's not it.

Oz,the 'The Wire' is a US tv series set in Baltimore and follows the Police squad that battles drug dealers in the city.Excellent series, gritty without being too grim and some very good performances. It has violence and a huge amount of swearing so its on late, series two starts tonight on BBC2.

Thanks Rob, I don't think it's been released here yet. Underbelly is more or less a true to life doco/drama, they use the real names of the crims involved and it has some voice over narration to pad out the missing bits they didn't portray on film.

I got the first series for Xmas and could not stop watching it..knocked it over in a week.
I did read somewear that it will get played in the U.K.
28 people were gunned down over 8yrs in the Melbourne underworld war.
yes the real gritty Australia :)
